Inserting TOC into existing document and rethreading text

New Here ,
Feb 15, 2020 Feb 15, 2020

I have an exisitng document (100 pages) and would like to add a TOC after all the front matter...around page 6. I only have one master style. I am creating an epub of poems.

I can insert two pages at page 6. I can generate and insert the TOC onto those pages. Looks perfect. However, the text threads jump from page 5 to page 8. In the screen (and in print) the flow works perfectly. When I export to epub, the TOC ends up at the end of the book, not at after the front matter. I believe this is becasue the threads flow through the orignal pages, then gets to the two I added.

How can I get the two new pages into the basic thread flow?

Thanks for an help

When you export out an EPUB it's possible to set the order of content based on what you have manually defined within the Articles panel. If this might help and you need some guidance using the Articles panel please let us know.

Thanks for the reply. I had considered articles, but skipped it. Your response had me reconsider. I still run into the same problem. When I select Pages 1-5, drag them into an article, it takes all 100 pages (since it's one threaded story with the contents plopped in at pages 6-7, so same effect.

Not sure I'm explaining well, but hopefully the screen grab below illustrates better (see how the thread skips the two contents pages?).

Is there any reason you have to have all of the content in one continuous set of threaded text frames? Could you split this up a little? For example, have the opening content as a series of threaded frames, then have the TOC and finally have the bulk of the content as another series of threaded frames. By breaking all this up a little you should be able to better control the order of everything within the Articles panel.

As you've discovered, depending on how your epub is constructed, your text thread will drive the sequencing of your document.

So if you want to include your ToC information into your document, you probably need to insert the ToC into your primary text thread.

1) Click into your ToC's independent text thread. Select Cmd/Ctrl+A to select it, then Cmd/Ctrl+X to cut it, dependent on whether you're using a Mac or Windows-based system.

2) Go to the end of your text on Page 5. Place your cursor there, then hit the Return/Enter key and press Cmd/Ctrl+V to past the ToC into your main text thread. The start of your ToC will now thread through pages 8 and 9. We'll fix that next.

3) Click on the "+" button at the end of page 5. This picks up the text for the thread in your cursor. Navigate to page 6 and place it. Then, pick up from the "+" button on the end of page 6 and navigate to page 7 and place it again. Finally, click on the entry button at the start of page 8 to re-esablish the page sequencing within a single thread.

4) Adjust the page breaks for your pages if you're defining print and/or fixed layout epub. That's not necessary if you're creating a flowing epub, but it's nice for reviewing the InDesign document.

Hope this helps,

Randy
