Is it possible to programmatically modify XHTML generated by InDesign?

New Here ,

I have a (growing!) list of manual steps to manually modify the generated XHTML files after exporting to EPUB from InDesign. Is it possible to automate them from within InDesign with some kind of script (eg javascript), or I should just write the scripts outside of InDesign and run it manually post export myself?

Thank you.

Hi k34676673 ,

you better ask this in:

InDesign Scripting

To answer your question: Yes it should be doable.

You will hire a scripter for that task.

Should a moderator move that thread over to InDesign Scripting?

Regards,
Uwe

Uwe, I am not so sure it's a worthwhile expenditure of someone's time.

You can not change anything inside the exporting process itself – that is part of ID's code base. After exporting, you have XHTML but it is packaged inside an e-pub file. That means you have to unpack, edit, and re-pack – all while maintaining the e-pub's integrity.

This sounds like "use the right tool for the right task". InDesign has become pretty good at exporting e-pubs, but if you want to edit these in turn, use an e-pub editor.

Hi Jongware,

sounds very reasonable.

Now that the thread is in InDesign Scripting, maybe this question should then be moved on to:

InDesign EPUB ?

Uwe
