Is my Indesign slow?

For the first time in my life I am working on a 570 page long document. The .indd file I am working on is 97mb in size. All the text is black in colour and there are no shapes or graphics made in this file. It has 28 different master pages. 10 paragraph styles and consists of lots of externally linked images in jpeg and png format of filesize at the max of 3 mb. Most images are below 1mb in file size. These are the only non text item in my document.

I am working on my PC which is not connected to any network or something like that. All the linked images are placed in my hard drive.

When I add pages in the file, indesign hangs for 3-4 seconds and then adds pages.

There are no complex graphics in the indd file. But it takes sometimes 30 seconds to open up.

I wanted to confirm is this a normal behaviour of InDesign? I am using cc 2017 version and windows 10 -64 bit.

Hi,

This is most likely a performance issue with InDesign. Obviously this is not a desired behaviour.

How fast InDesign works depends on the ram available, system specs, currently running programs and the preferences you have set.

As a start you can try if deleting cache and prerences resolve your issue.

My RAM is 8 GB DDR3 and I have NVIDIA gt730 2gb graphics card, and my processor is i3 2100@ 3.10 GHz. The currently running programs while using InDesign are Photoshop and Illustrator in minimized position but without any files open.

I know how to reset preferences of indesign. What is the procedure to delete cache?

Hi,

Delete cache and preferences:Troubleshooting 101: Replace, or "trash" your InDesign preferences

I would suggest you the following:

1. Delete cache / preferences

2. Close your AI and PS after saving all the work

3. Restart your machine

4. Launch InDesign and create a blank 600 page document

5. Add a page in this blank document as well

You can then open your document and add pages...

And let us know if you feel any difference...

-Aman

Sometime InDesign stumbling on the many-pages documents. Try to do some few documents with a 100-250 pages and work in a book (indb). That would be a faster tip than try to find "why".
