Hi everyone,
I’m working on a recurring project where I need to design and lay out a 10-page newspaper. I'm looking for ways to speed up the process by using Adobe InDesign's AI-powered tools or any automation features available—especially those that could help generate page layouts based on predefined graphic templates.
My goal is to reduce the time spent on manual layout by providing a set of design templates and letting InDesign (or any integrated AI extension) apply those automatically, depending on the content—such as articles, images, and headlines.
I’d really appreciate any help on the following:
Is there an AI-driven feature or extension in InDesign that allows automatic page layout based on templates?
Are there examples or demos available to understand how this can be set up?
Can the AI handle content fitting, text/image balancing, and maintaining visual consistency across all pages?
What’s the best practice for preparing the templates so the AI knows how to apply them?
Any third-party plugins or scripts you recommend for automating this type of editorial layout?
Any advice, resources, or walkthroughs you can point me to would be incredibly helpful. I’m looking to streamline this process significantly and would love to hear from others who’ve tried something similar.
Thanks in advance for your help!
Boris

As far as I know, there are no AI-driven tools for InDesign that would do what you need. There are some editorial systems, scripts, and plug-ins that may partially automate the process. I'll need to look them up; I'm sure others will list the ones they're familiar with.

In addition to Robert's solution, Adobe has a list of editorial systems - but they're probably overkill for your needs (if they can achieve what you need at all, that is):

If you work on Windows - I would suggest my ID-Tasker tool - paid version.
Depends on how good you'll prepare your source material - it can be configured to be a one-click-solution.
Or it can still speed up the process by eliminating mundane clicking - user will have to select text or objects and execute a specific Task.
And overall - forget about "ai" - it will always be only "guessing" and you'll have to waste time checking if everything has been done correctly. It's better to focus on preparing source material correctly.

I can help you configure it - for free - and also help you to organise your whole workflow.

Hi Boris,
Here I posted scripts written (especially, according to their requirements) for the L'Express de Toronto newspaper.
All repetitive processes — almost everything you can do manually in InDesign — can be automated.
