Need help restarting a list

I have a long document with a few numbered list sections. On the second block of numbers, I set the style to Mode: Start At 1. All the paragraphs had the number 1 in front of them. If I change to Mode: Continue from Previous Number, the number starts at 12 (the previous list in the document had 11 items, so this next block is continuing on at 12 as you would expect when you click continuous - not starting over at 1). My Number format is correct: ^#.^t

The Start at number option just repeats the number you choose to start with and does not increment after that start number.

(Moved to a new thread. This is a different question than the one you posted to.)

But then you have an extra / useless style - or even more than one - if list starts after different parts of the text / different styles??

No - you'd have style for Body Text anyway - or another style. so you're just adding the Numbering to the style - set it to 0 with no text in the field - then numbering restarts for the lists everywhere.

It's not adding a style - just adding the Numbering function to existing styles.

As long as you set level higher than 1 where your main list will be set to Level 1 - but still, what if your list have blocks of Body Text in between - and you have more than one level?

For me, it's worked really well - I don't normally restart lists manually - but there are options to get it done either by introducing numbering into your other styles and have them set at 0.

It definitely works - I've not come across a situation where it hasn't worked for me, personally.

And if I do - there are more ways to do it - mentioned here already.

The numbering feature is quite weak and overly complex and hasn't been updated in a long long long time.

*quick edit*
Bearing in mind I've worked exclusively with long documents for close to 20 years now.

Like so many other "version 1" features in InDesign, it never got a "version 2."

I'm not going to get into a lengthy debate about this but it does work and it has worked since this feature was introduced in, I think, CS3. But as noted, in most cases it's easier to reset it manually.

It works until it doesn't. And the only fix is a visual review of all affected lists to make sure the "restart at 1" command didn't get lost.

Nothing lengthy to argue. 😄
