When I open the page class, I just get a limited set of options. I need to alter the content of the page. That option does not appear on the editor page that opens when I click on the page master.
I think a screen shot would be helpful here, but in the meantime, to navigate to a master page, either use the Page Navigation menu in the bottom left corner of the document window or double-click the master you want to edit in the Window > Pages panel.
Once on the master, if you still can't edit the master page objects: try Object > Unlock All on Spread or maybe you are on a linked master. In that case, navigate to the parent master or Ctrl Sh click (Mac: Cmd Opt click) on the objects to copy them forward.
