I have a long outline document that will be formatted with paragraph styles that includes numbered list. The first level of the numbered list is 1.1, 1.2, 1.3 that will progress to 2.1, 2.2, 2.3, then 3.1, 3.2, 3.3, etc. If I broke this into separate chapters, I could use one style with [^H.^#] tag for the first level. But, the sections will flow continuously, and be kept within one document.
Currently, I have multiple first level styles with the following tags [1.^#] , [2.^#] , [3.^#], etc.
Is there any way to have one style for the first level that can number each section properly? TIA
Hi Jeffrey:
Se the first two levels as follows:

Again, just note how those first two levels increment:

Here's an excellent tutorial which tells you how to create a multi-level numbered list within a single document:

Thanks Steve for the info, but unless I am not getting it, the article does not address how one style can progress from 1.1, 1.2, 1.3 then to 2.1, 2.2, 2.3

It should work, it's just a little different syntax. Look at the choices in the menu to the right of the Number field.
If you need to restart the numbering of a level, play with the settings for the Mode menu and the Restart Numbers at the Level After options.
Play with it a little. I haven't done exactly what you're doing but I have to leave at this moment so I can't give you the exact formula.

Thanks Barb, I now get why my document is not numbering the way I expected. The section title was numbered manually, so I did not include numbering for that particular style.
