Numbering a figures span

Hello there!
I'm in the making of a book with tons of images, that i'm numbering using paragraph style / lists.
What I need to do is to group some numbers to save space, for example instead of having my normal Fig. 1 / Fig. 2 / Fig. 3 etc i'm looking for something like Fig. 1-3

Is there a way I can do it?

I think the answer is almost certainly going to be "no, not without a custom script," but I should ask: Where do you want it to say "Fig. 1–3" ? In a cross-reference?
