page size transfer of pdf document

New Here ,
Oct 25, 2018 Oct 25, 2018

I am new to InDesign and apologize if this is obvious question - I have a 5x8 novel that I can transfer in a multipage document - but it never lines up when transferred.   I changed margins on original to 5x8 on the pdf to transfer initially - doesn't line up with 5x8 on the Indesign template.

I transferred original 8.5x11 size and then adjusted margins and once set to 5x8 - the text stays at 8.5x11 and is outside template.

What am I doing wrong?

It really really sounds like you expect an imported PDF to be edited as text when placed into InDesign.

Is that the case?

Thank you for responding. I am not sure what you mean by “edited as text“. Like I said I am new to this. My text transfers normally but on all 250 pages it does not fit into the frame. I am transferring a 5 x 8 PDF document to a 5 x 8 template. I can adjust the text to get it to fit but it only will adjust on one out of the 250 pages. I hope that makes sense

Are you placing your PDF into Indesign and not getting the size correct? If so, check the "show import options" box when importing the PDF and choose crop to media.

I will try that but I know the PDF is formatted to 5 x 8 and a size to the document I was importing to also two 5 x 8. I assume if my final size is 5 x 8 I need the incoming document to be that size as well correct? I assume I can’t change that size once it is imported…

The PDF may be formatted to 5x8, but the import settings may be cropping to artwork, rather than media. That would cause variation and funkiness. There's a script called "replace" that lets you select a placed PDF and conjure up import settings after it is already placed in a document. Very handy.

I will give this all a try. Thank you so much for helping. The information that is coming into in design is all text without any images. I will try what you listed here and let you know! Thanks again
