Paragraph style not working

Participant ,
Sep 14, 2023 Sep 14, 2023

I've been going through this book applying paragraph styles, and all of a sudden the style application isn't fully applying. On the page I'm on, it changed the font, but not the font size. I've cleared the overrides, but no matter what I do the font size is still wrong. Is there something else I can do?

Did you apply a character style, directly or via nested, line or GREP styles?

Have you checked to make sure you don't have a Character Styles applied to the whole paragraph in the paragraphs that are not updating?

Character Styles should never be applied to whole paragraphs. And you've just discovered why.

Hi @detritus books ,

hm. Could you share two spreads of that document?

Perhaps this:

Check if the text frames where you see the issue were scaled and the scaling percentage is not showing up with 100%.

You could redefine scaling of the affected text frames to 100% with the options of the Transform panel and apply the paragraph style again using the option to not allow overrides.

Hmm, where would I see if the text frames are scaled? I don't know how that could've changed from one page to the next...

You can see the scaling factor of any element with the Transform panel.

Or you can see it in the Control panel.

Made this up for you: two text frames threaded. One flow of text with exactly the same applied paragraph style. No overrides in text formatting. The obvious issue, the text in the second frame is bigger than in the first frame:

The transform panel reveals that the second text frame is scaled to 120%:

Of course, in your case it could be perhaps something else. Something more exotic. So my suggestion to share two spreads of the document.

The only character style I have applied is italics. But what would be weird to me, is that a paragraph flows from one frame to the next, and it's normal in the first frame, but not in the second...

Okay actually, I just applied the paragraph style and cleared character style even though none should've been applied, and it worked! But, my next paragraph has italics in it, so, am I going to have to manually redo the italics as I go???

No one answered your last question. So, is that a yes? That you do have manually change the itallcs? Did you ever find that out? It would seem so, if there can't be any variation in the character style, in order for the paragraph style to work properly.

hmm, if that's the case, I don't know how it could've happened. The italics all got applied first thing when I did a find/replace finding italics and replacing them with the italics character style...
