Renaming indesign file

Community Beginner ,
Sep 03, 2025 Sep 03, 2025

I have a completed design file packaged. I've received an order from my client to an upgrade from the original design.  I want to save the original to a new project ID but have never been able to make it work as the links remain tied to the original. Is there a way to make a completed INDD file to a new one with links tied to the new file?

Thanks to those who know more than me,

Joe

Save as new INDD will do it. Or package again with the new name.

Hi Joe,

Just to be clear:

Save your InDesign file with the new name.

Then package that file.

The InDesign file that's in the package folder will be linked to the items that are in the package folder.

The InDesign file that is not in the package folder will still be linked to the original items, so be sure to use the one that's in the package folder.

To add to that, you must select Update Graphic Links so the newly-saved INDD file links to the files that are now in the Links folder in the Package Folder, otherwise the new file will still be referencing the links in their original location.

Even is that wasn't done, it would be an easy task for the recipient to relink to the collected Links.

Brad,

I tested this and did not need to relink anything. The InDesign file inside the package folder is linked to the graphics inside the package folder.

Just a precautionary thing then. If it works without checking that box, then great. It makes sense... on the recipient's computer, InDesign should find the Links folder in the package folder first anyway and auto-relink even if the links haven't been updated. But on the OPs computer, if the checkbox isn't checked, the links will still refer the original source locations.

On the OPs computer, the InDesign file that is inside the package folder will link to the graphics inside the package folder, not the original source locations. Honest!
