Rotate text

Contributor ,
Dec 05, 2010 Dec 05, 2010

Hi everyone,

I've typed some text into a text frame and now need to rotate the text 90 degrees. The text frame has round corners so I didn't want to create a separate text frame for the text and then rotate that. So is there a way to rotate the line of text within the one text frame, similar to how you'd do this in Microsoft Word?

Appreciate any advice.

First create round corner frame and using Type Tool (T), double click the object which you created and enter the text and rotate the frame whichever direction you want

Thanks for the reply,

So there mustn't be a similar command like in Word, ie. in word you can rotate the paragraph within the text frame.

If you draw a text box in Word and then type in some text, there's a button on the textbox toolbar called "change text direction". When you click it, the text goes from being positioned horizontally on the top of the text box to the right of the text box. So it's like the text itself is rotated 90 degrees within the text box.

Don't think you can do this in Indesign can you?

InDesign isn't Microsoft Word.

There are some things that just work differently.

In InDesign you draw the text frame and you have to rotate the frame the direction that you need it to be in.

It couldn't be simpler to do either, draw a text frame then rotate it using the Rotate Tool or using the Rotate button on the Control Panel at the top of the screen.

I'm not sure what yo have against rotating the text frame, but you actually can rotate the text layout in the CJK versions of InDesign or using World Tools Plus.

You could aslo use either of those to rotate individual characters!

I don't have anything against the method - I was just wondering if there was a similar Word-like method but obviously not. I'll just use the methods described.

Thanks everyone for the input.

The only option to change text direction is when text is in a table and in the Cell Options you can change the text direction.
