Save for web directly from InDesign...

New Here ,
Oct 02, 2025 Oct 02, 2025

Hello, everyone.
Is there a way to save for the web directly from InDesign? (Like there is in Illustrator)
A plugin, a script...

Thanks,
Diogo

Hi Diogo, welcome. InDesign doesn’t have a built-in “Save for Web” like Illustrator. You can export JPG or PNG (File > Export) and set resolution and colour space, but for real web optimisation it’s usually best to run the export through Photoshop or a tool like TinyPNG afterwards. InDesign is geared more to print, so web output isn’t its strength.

If you tell us more about what you're trying to do there might be a plugin/script out there or that be be written.

Can you show us what you're trying to do? Plugins/Scripts can be specific, so knowing what you're trying to do is vital.

Only to save/export static images for WhatsApp ads and screensavers. I work for a state-owned entity. We have an internal TV circuit and targeted screensavers that we use as a medium.

Gotcha, thanks for the context. Just to make sure we’re aiming in the right direction, do you need:

• A specific pixel size or aspect ratio for these WhatsApp ads/screensavers?
• A particular file format (PNG, JPG, etc.) or multiple file formats?
• And are you looking to optimise file size automatically, or is it mainly about exporting quickly without extra steps?

If I know those bits I can see what the next steps are.

I believe everyone mentioned... 🙂
For screen savers, always 1920 × 1080, optimized: if predominantly flat areas, we use PNG, if photo, we use JPG. For WhatsApp, sometimes 1080 × 1080; sometimes 1080 × 1920, depending on the volume of content.
"Save for web" option in PS and AI is always handfull.
Tx for your interest.

Makes sense, thanks for clarifying. InDesign just doesn’t have the same “Save for Web” option like Photoshop/Illustrator. Your best bet is to export to JPG/PNG at the resolution you need (File > Export > PNG/JPEG), set it to RGB, and then run it through Photoshop’s “Export As / Save for Web” or a tool like TinyPNG or Squoosh for optimisation. That way you keep control over quality and file size.

InDesign’s strength is print layouts, so for web-optimised graphics it’s always worth running the exported files through a second tool to clean them up.

I've used this before https://sproutsocial.com/landscape/

It would be better to just use Illustrator or Photoshop as it has the Save for Web function.
