Simple Question: how to create single object out of image and text?

Hey thanks for reading. My goal is to create a graphic for a button. The graphic combines a simple image I've imported and a word beside it. I need to make these two into a single object so that I can convert them into a button. Grouping them doesn't seem to work.

Grouping does work to create a button:

Select both text and image.

Thank you both. You were right, of course.

For posterity: the reason I was unable to create a button out of a text object and an image was that one of those was already (unintentionally) a button.
