I have this problem since a few days: if I open a layout with a version of InDesign earlier than 2023 (I use 2020 and 2021 for some projects) I see that all the small caps put in previously are skipped.
A white space appears instead of the word in small caps, I have to select and remove the small caps so that the word “reappears.”
Has anyone had the same problem?

-What's your version of the operating system?
-How do you open InDesign files saved with InDesign 2023 or later in earlier versions? Do you first save them as IDML - or just open as is?

Is it one specific typeface experiencing the issue? Does the word stay visible if you reapply small caps, or does it vanish again? have you changed/upgarded your fonts recently? are you on a different platform?
The mechanism for small caps has changed as fonts have gotten more advanced. As you probably know, in the old days, small caps were "faked" by simply using the capital letters of the font and reducing them to a defined percentage (Preferences > Advanced Type > 70% (or whatever)), but newer OpenType fonts have actual small caps glyphs designed into the font set itself, and InDesign will use these instead going forward, so if you were opening an older file, this might be causing a conflict.
That being said, there were other threads about similar issue with small caps in CC2020, so it might have been a bug at some point.
What are the exact versions of ID are you using? (e.g. v15.x.x.x)
