Not to sound condescending about it, but the fastest way to place a line on the top or side of an image would be to draw one.

To bullet-proof it and make sure it stays exactly where you want it, you can use the Object>Arrange>Bring to Front menu command, or its keyboard shortcut, then use the Shift key and click on the underlying image to select both the line and its image, then use the Object>Group menu command or its keyboard equivalent to put the two together as a single InDesign element. You can also save the process as an as an Object Style and then apply it to other relevant images at your control and leisure. You can learn more about Object Styles through this link. Read through the follow-on links from that help page and you'll be an object-stylin' pro in no time.

Hope this helps,

Randy

Exactly. The OP appears to be completely overthinking this one. This is a piece of cake if smartguides are turned on.

Another method is to color the background of the image frame and enlarge the frame slightly. This assumes the top of the image is not cropped by the frame. You can use the Control panel or Transform panel to size the frame precisely. The advantage is you don't have a group but the items move together.

And to improve on that, use frame fitting options and set a negative crop amount:

AND set up an Object style to automate the settings.

Use the "group" feature including an adhoc graphic line could be a right way to play … but surely not manually, only with 1 click!  😉

Maybe soon on FRIDNGE web site before the end of the year!

thank you.

my quesiton was regarding images, but i'm working with text boxes as well, i tried making this format with creating my own lines and covering up the borders with filled frames, when i export it, you can see exactly what i did and it doesn't look professional.
there must be a way to get a stroke only on specific sides. even in word/ publisher it's possible - can anyone help me do this in indesign - create double strokes at the distance i want

Could you show entire pages and post an InDesign sample-document (saved in .idml)?

… So your matter is just: I have an image, how could I simply add a double-lines above covering the width of the current page and a double-lines below covering the width of the image! … Let's say just selecting the rectangle containing the image + 1 click!!
