Hello Guys,

I have a text with a stroke. I want to change the stoke with a style, let’s say: dashed. IT IS NOT POSSIBLE!!! I rememember I could do it with older versions of Indesign. It is not possible anymore with Indesign CC 2018?

Or can I change something in the preferences etc.? For me it is a no-go that I can not change the stroke style on a text without creating an outline of the text. I want that the text is editable and choosing several stroke styles.

Thanks in advance.

Linus

Hi Linus:

I don't recall any version of InDesign that could change the stroke style for text (and looked as far back as CS6 to confirm.) I know that no version of InDesign supported multiple stroke styles. Both however, are available in Illustrator via the Appearance panel. I think you may be confusing the two applications.

Don't despair, you can set this up in Illustrator and place the art in InDesign. If you find a typo, just right+click the image in InDesign > Edit Original. Edit the text in .ai file, save and close and the art will update in InDesign.

Hello Barb, thank you very much. It is true. Maybe I had Indesign in mind but have done it with Illustrator. Nevertheless I don´t see anything against using different stroke styles on text without creating outlines. Why it shouldn´t work? (Hello Adobe, please change that. Can be useful!)

Hi Linus:

Glad we got that straightened out.

Now we are on to a feature request for a future version of InDesign which you can log in here: Adobe InDesign Feedback. I have seen this come up on occasion, so it would be a good idea to come back one more time and link to your request so that others who see this thread because they are looking for the same thing can link over to vote it up for you.

In the meantime...Adobe Illustrator and the Appearance Panel.

It's possible, but it's just a kind of stopgap. The help file lists 2 options:

a) Menu Type > Create Outlines (bad!)

b) Same menu, press the Alt Key (Windows)/ Option key (?, Mac) and choose Create Outlines . This will create a copy of the text as path exactly over the editable text. Now you can modify the stroke.

Thank you very much, Fenja. A pity that ist doesn´t work on editable text. Like I already wrote: I don´t see anything against using different stroke styles on text without creating outlines. Why it shouldn´t work? (Hello Adobe, please change that.)
