Text Box Over Colored Box

Explorer ,

I made a colored box with about a 10% blue screen. How can I place a text box on top of it?

Thanks

Draw the text frame with the text tool, enter the text and move the frame over it.

You may need to use object > arrange > move to front command which will only work for items on the same or a higher layer.

Also, make sure text wrap is not applied to the background.

You might also make your life easier by just doing this all in one frame instead of two. At least this is what I would do.

If you're new to InDesign, here are steps for what Scott is suggesting.

1. Choose the Type tool and drag out a frame.

2. Choose the Selection (black arrow) tool and select the frame. Then you can give the frame a fill color (background color) using the Swatches panel or Control panel.

3. Click in the frame with the Type tool, and you can type some text. You can also color it in the Swatches or Control panel. Notice the "T" icon means that you're choosing a fill color for the text.

4. To center text in the text frame, use the Paragraph or Control panel to choose the Horizontal Center icon.

5. To vertically center the text, choose the Selection tool to select the frame. Choose Object > Text Frame Options. On the General tab, choose Align Center at the bottom in the Vertical Justification section:

Thanks to both Rob Day and Steve Werner for taking the time to create screen shots to support my recommendation for placing text over a filled box. To me this is so much easier than creating separate text frames and object frames. No grouping is needed afterward, and creating equal spacing or margins is always precise.

Perhaps the best part of the whole approach is that all stroke, fill, effect, and type attributes can be assigned and controlled by a simple Object Style.

There's also paragraph shading.

This illustrates Scott's single text frame with a fill and inset:

And the Paragraph panel's Paragraph Borders and Shading

I forgot about Paragraph Shading, Rob. Good one!

Bruce,

Did any of the suggestions above solve your issue?

Please update the forum so that we can continue to troubleshoot if needed.

Thanks, Andrea

Hi Andrea,

I've been trying to reply but I keep getting a message that says I don't have permission to post reply.

Of course now it works, ha!. I've been thrown into an editor position and I'm kind of new to the intricacies of InDesign. All the help was greatly appreciated. I'll probably forget and have many more questions, so please be patient with me. It seems so simple when you receive the knowledge from experts.

The Best,

Bruce
