What is the source of the text? Are you placing the text from a file, typing it, or pasting it?
This can be complicated because text has no physical size, unlike an image. Should the text frame be a column, or stretch between the margins, then, once a width is established, the height can be automatic based on the length of the text.
Perhaps what you want is an Object Style that automatically sizes a text frame. You would need to apply the style after creating the text frame. Below you can see I set the object style to use a width of 24p0 (4 inches) and to adjust the height only. The result is a text frame the width I want and the height of the text.

You can crete a text frame and define which paragrsph style is used, how it auto sizes and where it's positioned when text is inserted, regardless of the text source.
