Text disappears when using wrap text

New Here ,
Sep 05, 2018 Sep 05, 2018

Hi,

I am trying to add an image and need to wrap text so it fits nicely, however whenever I untick ignore text wrap my text disappears.

I tried doing this on a new document and it works fine so I am not sure if my file is somehow corrupted? I really do not want to start again.

Thanks,

Lauren

Hi Andrew,

yes. If the blue frame on your master has text wrap on then all text on all applied pages of that master will react on this.

Just turn off text wrap on that frame as well.

Maybe you turned on text wrap when you selected no object at all.

Then text wrap will become the default for all objects you draw.

So make sure you did not select anything and turn text wrap off.

Then select all objects on the spread and turn text wrap off.

Do that for every spread and also all masters.

After that turn text

Hi Lauren,

select the image and show the Text Wrap settings.

Maybe the values show a huge wrap around?

Could also be that a wrap is around the bounding box of the image and that is extending to all of your text.

Also select the white background rectangle with rounded corners and show the Text Wrap settings.

If the background rectangle is set to wrap text the riddle is solved. Turn Text wrap off for the rectangle then.

Turn wrap on for the contour of the image.

Regards,
Uwe

Uwe is right, the wrap-options of the image are the ones to check.

But there is another obstacle to take: which filetype is your image? Depending on that, images can have serveral ways to boss out the background. Here is what you need to do, if you have a tiff/psd and an alpha mask.

Check place/importoptions, select alpha mask there.

Bildschirmfoto 2018-09-05 um 13.17.35.png

No wrap yet:

Bildschirmfoto 2018-09-05 um 13.18.29.png

Just select "Wrap object form" (the black dot), dunno if I translated that right.

See? The wrong selection of what to use to boss out the background can have bad effects. Here the whole text is wrapped away and also it doesnt fit the object.

Bildschirmfoto 2018-09-05 um 13.18.33.png

Now i selected the right options – Use: alpha mask. Alphamasks name: MyNameForThat.

If you have a clipping path, in a jpg maybe, your selection would be this:

Here is wrap with text wrapped

Maybe your paragraph settings for your text are to <no break> or use some crazy breaking-rules (also paragraph settings)?
And also please set cmd+alt+i (Font » Show hidden charaters) to show the paragraphs and breaks in the text.

Ill try to explain, but I only have a german client for screenshots, and Im guessing the exact translation.

First, open up Windows » Formats » Paragraph Styles.

Depending on how you break your lines (a Enter for a paragraph, a Shift+Enter for a hard linebreak), your lines of text use a style shown in the patagraph-styles window. If you dont work with styles, the [Simple. Paragraph] (translation right?…that one with the brackets) is used to format the text, eg when you create a fresh textbox (default, one can change that). Now doubleclick that paragraph in paragraph-styles-window the text is using/is selected. Now you got that window I posted, the settings for that paragraph.

You can also use the Window » Fonts and Tabs » Paragraphs to alter the settings in a submenu. But it might be a better idea for your catalog-style lokking document  to setup and work with paragraph- and text-styles.

Is there somewhere I can do a screen share with someone to try figure out the problem?

Last thing to check: hyphenation.
If a word cant be hyphenated, InDesign shows overset, because the word cant be fit into that textbox, and InDesign gives you the option (red +) to link the textboxconent to another textbox, whose width maybe suitable for your text.

See this: "Mood" cant be visualized, even if theres a second line to break into. Because "Mood" cant be shortend thru hyphenation, the whole textbox stays empty/unfitable.

Hi Laubender, did my screenshots give you any insight as to what the issue could be?

Hi Andrew,

turn off Text Wrap on your white background rectangle with rounded corners.

That should be all you need to do. Unless the blue background object also has Text Wrap applied to.

Uwe

A little word, to make not a mistake I made switching from Quark to InDesign: TextWrap with Quark only affects object below. In InDesign, thats not the case anymore and object in the background with textwrapsetting do influence everything above and below.

In your case, the white box is set to wrap – to wrap any text above or below. So while setting that box, it pushes away the text of that overlying textbox completly.

I have done the following and my text is still not wrapping - see image below.

  • turned blue background to off
  • turned white box to off
  • turned text box to on

When i start from scratch I have done the following (Blue box is off, white box is on and text is off) and it seems to work. But when i do this on my current file it doesn't work? This makes no sense to me? I don't want to start from scratch. Is there anyone I can contact to do a screen share to talk to someone real time rather then this back and forth? Your text disappears because there's obviously yet another object with active text wrap in action. You should carefully revise all your text wraps. I strongly doubt there is a good reason to have double or even triple wraps.

And no, here's a user-to-user forum (not an Adobe service), so no direct calls.

Edit:

Oh, I see, Uwe already said this about multiple text wraps, in post #14. Nothing more to add then.

I have stripped it all back and only the 3 layers.

Is it possible I havent done something with my blue box in master pages which is resulting in it only working when i dont have the blue box in place?
