You don't specify the font, but elaborate old style fonts, especially those with 'antique' finish, often have complex hinting. Messing with their edges and outlines can do odd things.
This is even more true of fonts from lesser quality sources, where hinting and kerning data might be skimpy.

all fonts give it a try. There is more than one font here look at the last 'e'

I'm not seeing any issues on any font with that styling. I have seen oddities with the sort of fonts I noted, with "rough" or pen-stroke edges.
I'd guess this is something specific to your system, or even this document. Does it persist in a completely new, clean doc?
