Hoping these photos from a book help. I'm trying to use parent pages to apply author plus page number to recto page, and book title plus page number to verso page. And then apply parent page spread to remainder of first chapter before synching with other chapters in the book. Thanks!

What problem do you encounter?

Did you set up the document as a a document with facing pages.

No, I didn’t. I set up a book, then inserted individual chapters into it after creating them, placing Word documents in them and saving the results as Indesign files.

Solved the problem by going into page settings and turning off "Allow Off Allow Document Pages to Shuffle." (Sort of counterintuitive.) Then I was able to arrange pages into spreads with odd and even pages, and the scheme I wanted works!

You should have used Facing pages.

For a long time - I was thinking the same 😉

Until you think about it from the InDesign's "point of view" - when checked, it means that InDesign controls flow of pages - when user adds new pages - and makes sure, that there is only one page - Facing Pages OFF - or two pages per Spread - Facing Pages ON.

Otherwise - user can add more than one / two pages per Spread - and on either side of the spine.

No one recommended a book here. Why did you not set up facing pages?
