two columns but only inserting on one side of the column

New Here ,
Sep 25, 2017 Sep 25, 2017

So I have a project for my class in which i need to insert two word files side by side, my question is is there anyway to only insert a file to the left columns of the pages rather than both the left and right side, because I would like one file to only be in the left column while the other file to be in the right column, whenever I try to place the file, it places it in both column, this is in indesign cc.

I am missing something here? I am using a variation of Winterm's approach. Set up a 2-column document and add the two frames to the left hand master. Thread them to the appropriate frames on the right hand master.

On the body pages, auto-flow the 1st story in the column 1 frame and then the 2nd story I the column two frame.

If I add more text they flow correctly, If I edit the master page frames the text reflows.

Sure! But still can't replicate Bill's "issue"

But isn't that what happened in your video reply #9?

It does only if I don't hit the Shift button. Look carefully the icons ^^

I saw that when you posted it and it still didn’t stop the reflow creating different additional pages when I set up the threading of the frames with the shift pressed on the master or when I pressed the shift when either importing or pasting in text. The only way that worked for me was my original post and Rob's post #20.

Vinny, I think the difference might be that you are placing text, and in #22 where I'm showing the potential problem Bill might be having with Smart Text Reflow, I'm pasting the text. So, assuming the OP is placing and not pasting text, your #9 with regular text frames is the most straight forward and easiest method.

The OP should avoid a primary text frame when placing a text file. A primary text frame, which would normally be automatically overriden can really get in the way.

Here, newly added page with a primary frame. The primary frame is automatically overridden. If I try to place and autoflow to the overridden primary it won't work:

To get it to work my cursor has to be inserted into the primary frame (no shift key down) before the place

My solution to this was to use a real Primary frame for the left column

The Type>Smart Text Reflow preference will have an affect—for the setup you want it turned off.

The master spread with the threaded columns—neither are primary

Command-Shift click the left column on the first page and add or place the text

Click the outport in the first frame and Shift-click the next frame the capture shows the autoflow icon

Autoflow adds pages as needed even when Smart Text Flow is turned off

Repeat for the right side;

Yes, for this Smart Text Reflow does actually get in the way. A variation of manual text threading seems the best way to go.

For what it's worth, the way Barb suggested is the way I do it, and I get her results too.

I did auto-flow the text into the primary frames with the ( ) on the loaded text cursor

Bill, I think that Barb meant you need to hold down Shift while clicking, in order to "Autoflow" the text.

Icon must be (autoflow.png)

Yes, Vinny, I can't capture that as a screen shot a Mac these days so in a complete break from tradition, I just went for words.

I don't know why it overprints like this on Macs most days. (Every once in a while it straightens out, though, so I still hope it will be fixed someday.)

Hmmm...

now I'm confused.

The icon manfram.png is not autoflowing... Meaning you don't Shift-click?!

In this case, I got same result than Bill...

Gotta run. Checking out of hotel and off to teach. I had the file open from last night so undo'd back to the beginning. Remember threaded frames from the L to R master pages.

In the screen shot, I'm on body page 1, hovering over the primary frame on the left page. so I see the ( ) cursor and yes, auto-flow so holding the Shift key (which I forgot in the Mac loaded cursor is crazy screen shot above). SORRY!

Shift click over threaded primary frames to auto-flow in only the left column.InDesign CCss_015.png
