Type effect question

I was font shopping today and this caught my eye:

I don't know if I like the fuzzy black shadow in the upper half, but I definitely like the sharp white outline on the bottom half. Any thoughts on how to do this in InDesign?

Imagine two type objects stacked on top of each other, each dressed differently. Select the top object and apply a gradient feather to it. It would fade to transparency and thus reveal the lower object.
