Hi everyone!
I have been working in an IDML file for a few weeks now and I've never had a problem with saving/opening. Last night, I saved the file like normal however, when I went to open the file this morning a message popped up saying: Cannot open the file "filename.idml." Adobe InDesign may not support the file format, a plug-in that supports that file format may be missing, or the file may be open in another application.
Can someone please help me fix this - it's for a school project and I'm very anxious on potentially losing 30 pages of work.

Are you saying that everytime you save you use IDML? If so, why? If not, please back up and give us some more details such as InDesign version and operating system.

The issue only occurs for this one exact file. I save my other projects as .idml and there's no problem in opening them. I'm up to date as I'm using InDesign 2024.
I work on a mac - like I have been for years. Last night as I was saving the file like I usually do to a harddrive (I dont like using Adobe Cloud) everything saved normally. When I went to work on/open the file this morning, it would not open.

Why are you doing this? Just save it as INDD. There is no reason to save as IDML here.

Maybe the IDML itself got corrupted. Can you share the file for us to review? You can also try and open it as a ZIP, ideally it should unzip with containing a bunch of xml files

The dot at the end - is a typo or do you have it in the file name - "filename.idml>>>>.<<<<" ?
If it's not a typo in your message - you need to remove it.
