Variable Font Weight Issues in InDesign

I've downloaded 14 TrueType files directly from Google Fonts (and also tried activating Rubik directly from the Adobe Fonts Manager) - each time, Rubik Light is the only font that appears as a Variable font, and is the only font that doesn't work and is replaced with these odd characters. There really needs to be an option to deactivate variable fonts, because I have the corrects fonts available on my computer but an override in InDesign is preventing me from accessing it.

Hi @defaultx1yfl20ybxem
Since your question is about Adobe InDesign, I have moved this from the Photoshop forum where you posted for you.

Today the font is appearing in InDesign but the same Light Font doesn't work when being exported as a PDF (I've tried exporting as Spreads, Interactive as well, that didn't work either)

This is what I'm getting across my document. These random dots in random points where text should be.

Make sure you are only installing one set. If you download the Google fonts DO NOT install both the static versions and the variable at the same time. Also, make sure your do not have competing sources at the same time. i.e. don't activate Adobe Fonts at the same times as your Google fonts.
Since you've been experimenting, you probably have a very confused font cache now, which can also be causing your issues. Clear your font caches, restart your system, load only one set of fonts and try again.
Personally, when a font has such a varied style set as Rubik already has, I see no need to used Variable fonts anyway. They seem to be more trouble then they are worth.
