From both the Whats New and the Read Me files plus the discussions on this forum its apparent that CS5 development should (must?) be done using Microsoft Visual Studio 2008
The usual places I get software from no longer carry it, they only have the latest and greatest 2010 version
Could someone please recommend a trustworthy store that still has it in stock?

I have and it comes up with company names like "Royal Discount" or "eValue Software" that I've never heard of much less bought from.
I'd like to get a "oh these guys are OK" comment about a company before trusting them with a credit card number and placing a several hundred dollars order with them.
It seems a little bit bizarre to require a development tool which is no longer being sold. Has anyone come across a statement from Adobe about this?

It seems a bit bizarre to no longer sell a product that thousands if not hundreds of thousands of developers still use. Have you come across a statement from your "usual places" about this?

Have you tried purchasing CS4 from Adobe recently. It is part of normal business procedure to liquidate the old version, and pushing the newest greatest...
I haven't used any of those retailers, but I did research Royal Discount in the past and there stuff was legit. As a rule of the thumb when a company has thousands of reviews and the negative reviews don't sound too terrible I would feel comfortable with a couple of hundred dollars.

If you insist to *buy* e.g. for any esoteric features of Enterprise editions, Microsoft used to have a downgrade policy so you'd buy the latest, then receive the older media and keys. Just ask their license hotline before you shell out any money, this policy was limited to the US and not available in Germany. Here instead they gave straight recommendations for companies that specialize in oldtimer software - of course by then I already had the newer package.

I just got off the phone with the Microsoft Store and they apparently no longer have any to send.

The newer VS 2010 package would be fine, even preferable, if only it was usable 😞

Beware of express editions. There have been issues in the past. Just search the forum.

Yeah, the versions you can get don't work and the version that does work you can't get.

The issues I remember and those I found after a quick forum search were related to version mismatch.
I can second those (having debugged thru incompatible libraries and glue code myself e.g. during CS1) but I have not had any trouble yet with matching versions. I'd be very interested in details where you saw a difference between VS and the same version VS Express.
Thanks,
Dirk

Just to close off this thread, I finally got 2008 from SoftwareMedia.com
With my luck Adobe will announce support for VS 2010 next week

After waiting a few weeks for VS2008 we decided to try the express edition. No problem at all, everything builds and loads fine! And saves some money as well
