Conditional Text in Book Files

Community Beginner ,
Jan 02, 2019 Jan 02, 2019

Hello,

I inherited a book file that uses conditional text. I can't determine how to define what conditional text is visible when I save out a pdf.

I really don't want to have to open every single indd file to check the conditional text. Surly there must be a way to say use XX conditional text across the board...

Thanks for your help!

Hi Lisa:

Yes that is correct. But be careful what you have checked (and not checked) because whatever is checked is going to be synced across all of the files.

This is a great feature when you want to standardize the look of all of the chapters in the book window. To play it safe, I would only check the conditional text option until you understand the ramifications and/or work on a copy of the files.

Hi Lisa:

You can use Synchronize Options in the Book panel menu to sync conditional text settings (and many other things) from one chapter to the other chapters in the book.

Barb,

Thank you for your recommendation. Does this still apply if there are no chapters. The book was set up with every spread as an individual indesign file.

Thank You,

Lisa

Hi Lisa:

Are you using an InDesign book (.indb file) with linked InDesign files (.indd files) or are you calling an InDesign document a "book"? It sounds like the former, but please confirm. Sync is available for the .indd files in a InDesign book.

The term "chapter" refers to the .indd files linked to the .indb file. A chapter can be a single page, a spread or multi-page traditional chapters.

Barb,

It is an .indb file with linked .indd files (one per spread). So will I need to follow your screenshot above for each .indd file in the .indb or can I select all and make the update at once?

Thank You,

Lisa

Great! It's a little-known feature worth exploring further when you have time.
