Kathrin

Try deleting your InDesign preferences and cache files.

To delete preferences:

With InDesign closed Launch a Finder Window in column view and click on your home folder. With the Option Key pressed choose Library from the Finder Go Menu. Within the Library folder find the folder called Preferences and within it find the following two files and delete them: “Adobe InDesign” and “com.adobe.InDesign.plist”. When InDesign is next launched it will create new preference files and the program will be restored to its defaults.

After you’ve reset up the program (make sure that no document window is open), it is a really good idea to create copies of your personalized “mint” preference files (make sure that you quit the program before copying them—that finalizes your customization) and use them in the future to replace any corrupt versions you may need to delete.

To delete cache files:

With InDesign closed launch a Finder Window in column view and click on your home folder. With the Option Key pressed choose Library from the Finder Go Menu. Within the Library folder find the “Caches” folder. Within the Caches folder find and delete the entire file “Adobe InDesign”. I find that deleting the cache file completely leads to a lasting change.

If none of this works it could be that you are trying to run CS4 on an operating system which does not support it. Any Mac OS above Yosemite does not support CS4. You say that you're not sure whether it was a blackout or an update that changed things for you. That's the problem with running old software—it's only a matter of time before your luck runs out with it.

Hi Kathrin,
so what is missing is one important detail:
What is the exact version of your Mac OSX?

I'm still running InDesign CS4, also CS3, CS5, CS5.5, CS6 and the first incarnation of CC on an old Mac OSX 10.6.8. CS4 might run on 10.7.5, but I'm not sure with 10.8 and beyond.

FWIW: I really don't know why—currently—this thread is marked as "Assumed Answered".

Regards,
Uwe

It drives many of us crazy. It's the crazy software (called Jive) used in Adobe forums. We've had long discussions about that one. Even the moderators can't easily delete it.

To fix it, I have to add a reply (like this one) and mark it as correct, then unmark it as correct, and then delete the reply if it's not really needed. Really crazy. I'll do that now.

High Sierra was released on September 25. It does not support CS4 at all. It even had problems with Creative Cloud InDesign prior to the release of CC 2018. If you bought your Mac prior to September 25 and CS4 was running on what would have been just plain Sierra (which also did not support CS4) then you were very lucky indeed. But after installing High Sierra luck would have no longer been enough.
