Import whole Word doc, with images, into InDesign

I have a question. I think InDesign is the program that will be best for the projects I want to do but some of them are already partially done. Is it possible to transfer the text and images (and formatting) directly into InDesign from Word, as a whole? If it's page by page and image by image, it would take forever. Thank you for your help. I couldn't find an answer online. Susan

In principle yes. Set up a document with primary text frame, and when you Place your Word document you tick Show Import Options  and then use Microsoft Word Import Options dialogue box to match the Word text Styles with the InDesign Styles. Press shift when you place the document, so that the pages are created to fill the text.

Place the text, then place the images as a separate operation.

Thank you very much for your response. It looks complicated and I'm completely unfamiliar with InDesign, but I'll give it a try. Thank you!
