Is there a way to import variable data that has italics and bold included in some of the text fields, and can InDesign hold those characters during the merge? THANKS!

Hi,

Do you mean importing text from Word? Text variables (from type menu) in InDesign?

Hi Aman, importing text from an excel file.

But as I dig a little deeper, csv or txt can not hold those place values only xls or xlsx, but I can't use those formats to import files only csv and txt that I am aware of

Normally, both csv and txt files are plain text files, so that ought to answer your question.

About the only thing you can do is include formatting information as plain text and then use Find/Change to change that in actual formatting after importing.
