InDesign 2020 shuts down after splash screen Windows 7?

Explorer ,
Dec 09, 2019 Dec 09, 2019

Hello,

Is InDesign 15 / CC 2020 supposed to support Windows 7? On my stationary computer, InDesign CC 2020 will shut down while still on splash screen, giving an "encountered a problem and will shut down"-type error message. After the first update of InDesign 2020 it will now start on my laptop (also Windows 7), still not on my stationary. Win 7 64 bit, SP1, 12/16 gb RAM respectively. What would be the bottlenecks hardware wise? Any specific updates to Win 7 required? I am up to date regarding updates as far as I know.

It's supposed to but to be perfectly frank, it's time to move on. As much as many of us would like to help, you're not going to find a huge population of Windows 7 users anymore.

You should also take note that Microsoft is going to cease support for it soon.

Hi there,

Sorry to hear about the trouble you are facing with InDesign. As Bob confirmed InDesign 15.0 is compatible with Windows 7. You can also refer to this help article for more information on system requirement:

https://helpx.adobe.com/in/indesign/system-requirements.html

Regarding the issue that you are facing. I would request if you can try the steps below and share your observation:

  1. Reset Preferences:
  • Close all Adobe applications.
  • Go to Locations :
  • C:\Users\user\AppData\Roaming\Adobe
  • C:\Users\user\AppData\Local\Adobe.
  •  Rename InDesign folders to InDesign.old
  • Launch InDesign from CC.

  1. If that doesn't help, try booting the system into Safe Mode (https://support.microsoft.com/en-in/help/17419/windows-7-advanced-startup-options-safe-mode) and check how it works there. It starts your system so that it performs certain checks and prevents third party software/ services from automatically loading or opening. If it works fine in Safe mode, then there is some third party service or application like antivirus, plugins or web extensions which are conflicting with the InDesign.
  2. If that doesn't help either, login to the Hidden Admin account (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EfbMs3w-Z3s&t=53s). Check how the application works there. If it works fine there, then it could be related to permission errors. Follow these steps to repair permission errors: https://helpx.adobe.com/in/illustrator/kb/preferences-folder-read-only-error.html
  3. If nothing helps, then we need to troubleshoot this on a live session. Please head here (https://helpx.adobe.com/support.html) and select the chat button in the lower-right corner of the page. We can help faster that way.

Regards

Rishabh

This video shows how to enable the hidden administrator account on Windows 10. This works for Windows 8 and 7 seven as well. Here is the command to enable the hidden administrator account net user administrator /active:yes Here is the command to disable it net user administrator /active:no

Thanks to both of you for replying. I agree it's time to move on to current Windows sooner rather than later. Thanks for the excellent troubleshooting guide. Steps 1 and 2 did not solve my problem. I did though run into another issue after having visited safe mode - in normal startup Windows loaded a icon-less black screen and "this copy of Windows is not genuine". It most definately is; I purchased Win 7 Pro when building the workstation. This issue seems to be solved now, but it made me hesitating from troubleshooting any further. I still have InDesign 14 installed and do my work using that for now.
