When creating a new document, there appears to be a guide box that I'm not sure of the purpose... and would like to remove it, without removing or hiding the other guidelines. What is this inner box for exactly? (I'm using ID 5.5)

If you are referring to the purple coloured box it is the area within the margins. It can be changed at layout>margins and columns.

Yes, that was it. I see now! I was using a guideline to create a 1/8" margin, this works much better!

They show you the page margins. This is the area your text usually stays in. Have a look at

The pink horizontal lines are the top and bottom margins, and the vertical purple guides are the left and right margins. It looks like you ignored them and created your own teal ruler guides for the same purpose.
As per Ian, you might open Layout > Margins and Columns and enable Preview:
Then you can adjust the Margin values until they meet your guides:
Then View > Grids and Guides > Delete All Guides From Spread:
