Interactive indesign doc - magazine

Community Beginner ,

I am creating an interactive magazine - and I want to publish it for people to buy. With the publish online- it works beautifully but I worry that since it's a free service that they might take away the service or delete my magazine. Are there options to publish and monetize these documents online as an interactive pdf - I've looked for a year now and I am burnt out. No one uses flash anymore- so uploading it to my server as an html/swf is pointless. All of the other options do not work well--
I am doing a print copy of the magazine and as an added bonus I am giving an interactive copy that you go through and pages react etc.

Kinda disappointed that it's not easier than this. The publish online does give you an option to embed the code- and that works-- as does sharing the link- but if someone pays for this and it doesn't work-- I'm certain they will be ticked.

If you recommend the publish online option- is it possible to monetize simply by using the "hide sharing (which hides the url on the url bar) and share that link with a click in their cart (I can disable right click)
What did JK Rowling use to do her interactive epub3? There has to be an option out there... I see authors / magazines using it but-- trying to find information has been a needle in a hay stack.

Please advise.

Jill

There is no way to monetize Publish Online. You can create apps using in5 or Fixed Layout EPUBs that can be sold for use on iPads and Macs.

What puzzles the heck out of me- is that they offer interactivity- and they have a digital publishing suite, but it isn't publish friendly.

I tried doing a fixed layout epub, but it doesn't do the animations (ie: photos flying in from left- etc.)

Thanks,

Jill

Why do you think InDesign’s Publish Online isn’t ”publish friendly”?

in5 would do what you want but you have to pay extra, and you need to learn how to use it.

Digital Magazines, Mobile Apps, Web Banner, Microsites, & more from InDesign with in5 - Home

There are also a number of third part applications, such as Twixl, Mag+Best Publishing Software – Solution & Subscriptions, Automated Digital Publishing Software | mag+  and  Issu Digital Publishing Platform for Magazines, Catalogs, and more - Issuu

I signed up for Issuu thinking it would-- and it didn't work. Contacted support and they said they don't deal with interactivity at this time. Sucks because they have a monitize option.

Animations should work fine in Fixed Layout EPUB. What is it about the animations that is not working? Can you tell us more?

Derek's suggestion of using in5 is an excellent idea. I use it all the time and it works great. Your interactive publication would be viewable in any browser.

My cover has no animation, but for instance, on the opening page with my welcome letter- I have a letter with a wax seal slide over and pop into the frame next to my text. When you turn the page- the image fades in and the text is scrollable- so that the entire article is there- you have to just drag as you read.

Other pages, I have random things pop into frame as you get through the article-- and it kinda adds to the mood. one page I have snow falling over the entire page-- another page, I have Christmas lights twinkling- another is central park with snow falling... it's kinda neat. Originally I planned on hiring actors and set up video for how-to's etc, but if it's being this wonky-- it's like, why bother.
In the fixed layout- I set it up to read landscape and when it loads, the animations where images slide into frame from the left- don't work-- they're basic animations-- nothing animated in photoshop etc, but-- its moreso images coming into focus or sliding in..

Simple stuff- but it doesn't like it.

WHen I saw the publish online-- that works.. When I publish there is works beautiful on kindle and ipad-- so I thought-- what if I disable the right click on my site (where people can get the link and share it) and at checkout there's a "button " in their account where they can goto the adobe document. On the ipad it masks the url in the browser but on my laptop-- it shows the url which can be copied and shared.

I did iframes and that was a pickle. It did the "read me" box -- didn't like wordpress.

Ultimately, I thought about making 2 -- one interactive and one without the interactivity that way if someone could't load the file, at least they could read it in standard form. Publishing without interactivity-- no problem.

I used to work in PR and I did their magazines-- but I haven't done the Interactivity and I was kinda excited to use it to tell these stories.

Interactive PDF has been pretty much killed because only Adobe's PDF viewers on Windows and Mac handle it. Not even Adobe's viewers on phones and tablets do.

Multimedia interactive PDFs do not work on many devices because they depended on Flash

Agree- Flash had its day and even during that time it was touchy. I was using photoshop and dreamweaver in 2001/2? I think it was still in BETA. I remember them telling us FLASH was the future. ((yeah right))

I returned to college and studied design but adobe has been with me since the early 2000s. I like the idea of an APP- I've never created one, but I am open to playing. It sounds so silly to want interactivity- but in this particular magazine it really makes it look sharp. I've wanted to do it since Martha Stewart did her interactive mag in like 2009-- I saw that and I was like, "Oh, I need to do that..." The problem is-- the more bells and whistles you use-- the more trouble you have.

like others said IN5 is great. you will however need to host things yourself. IN5 will not host them for you.

But you can create apps with it that can be distributed via app stores.

In5 now have a training site called in5 Academy, where they have detailed video tutorials on how to create web apps and how to optimise and upload them to the Mac store, or how to by pass it: https://academy.ajarproductions.com/

I'm looking at the In5 site and I like this. Nothing looks hard on here- I'll email them and tell them what I want to do and see if they agree that it will work-- go for the pro plan to test it out and hopefully I can do it that way. When I finish it- I'll post a link here so you guys can play with it. In5 looks like the best option- so thank you guys so much. I've been looking for a long time and I think this might work.
