Text variable not showing driving me nuts!

Hi folks, I have working running headers in a book I'm working on but due to losing footnotes I decided to create a new document from scratch, but whatever I try, I can't get the <chapter title> variable to show up. Please note:

  • I cut and pasted a working running footer from an existing document.
  • I identified the chapter title properly, the same as in older documents: Chapter Title/Running Header (Paragraph Style)/style identifying chapter title.
  • I exported the new document to IDML and reimported it, no change.
  • I deleted my preferences. Ditto.
  • I quickly created another document and it also does the same thing, so I must assume operator error, but what when you copy a working header?

All I see where the chapter title is supposed to show up is the British pound symbol, NOT hashtag (see below). Does anyone have a clue to what's going on?

As Lilu says in Fifth Element: PLEASE HELP.

Hi Michael:

It sounds like you know what you are doing, but we have to start there anyway (sorry!)

  1. What is the name of the paragraph style you are referencing on the body pages? Does it appear in a style group (folder)? Is there a similarly-named style? i.e., Title vs title?
  2. Can you the share your Edit Text Variable dialog box?

I'm happy to look at the file, if you like. You can post it on dropbox and share the link here (public) or hover over my name and message me (private). Just a few pages is fine, but be sure the pages include the heading you are trying to pick up.

Thank you, thank you! That was the tip I needed. There was a conflict with an imported style of the same name! Thanks so much!
