Which Adobe product are you using?
Which version?
Which OS version?

Lightroom 5.6 is the software. This message appears: "An internal error has occurred: ?:0: attempt to index field, "?" (a nil value). What does it mean and how can it be corrected. Trying to find a number to phone so that I can talk to someone about this.

Are you running any 3rd party export plug-ins?

Could be a plugin, or could be native Lightroom lua code.

What were you doing when this error occurred?
Does it always happen?
etc.

PS - please state Lr version and OS.

I'm having this same problem. Here's the error:

an internal error has occurred: ?:0: attempt to index field 'error' (a nil value)

I'm using LR5.7 (monthly subscription) and Windows 7 OS. The error occurs when I'm trying to publish a Smart Gallery via SmugMug plugin 2.1.8 (says it's updated version). It takes for bloody ever and finally after hours upon hours of doing nothing (but saying operation in progress), there is this error. HELP!!! I need to be able to publish to SM.

Did anybody get any resolution on this? Getting the same error, using a Shootproof plugin on LR 7.1 subscription version running on MacOS Sierra.
