P: Deleting a photo from a selected group takes you to the first photo, not the next

Explorer ,
Aug 15, 2025 Aug 15, 2025

After upgrading to 14.5, I selected a group of photos for review. When I deleted one of the highlighted photos, the current photo became the first photo in the group instead of the next photo in the group when "Filter based on flag status (Unflagged Photos Only)" is active. I've restarted Lightroom Classic a couple of times and the behavior persists. I'm running on a Macbook 16 M1 Max with 64MB of memory Sequoia 15.5

Hey @swebsurf

I’m not able to reproduce this behavior on my end. Could you share a short video clip or a screenshot of your workspace? That will help us narrow down what might be happening.

To reproduce this change in behavior from LR 14.4 to 14.5:

1. Put three photos in Quick Collection.

2. Go to Library Loupe view and make sure File > Library Filters > Enable Filters is unchecked

3. In the filmstrip, select all three photos, with the second photo most-selected (showing in Loupe view).

4. Type Delete. Observe that:

LR 14.4: The third photo becomes the new most-selected, displayed photo.

LR 14.5: The first photo becomes the new most-selected, displayed photo.

Screen recordings attached.

  • In the develop module, when I am doing edits and deeper culling at the same time, I often have a group of 5-20 images selected.  Normally, I can have them flagged not show rejected images, and as I am going through, hit x to flag as rejected and it will filter that image out and go to the next image. Since upgrading to the latest version, every time I hit x, it goes back to the first image in the selected group.  I can leave them unfiltered and it works normally. This also occurs in the library module when viewing individual images within a selected group.
  • Lightroom Classic Version Number 14.5
  • Windows 11.0.2600
  • Nikon Ziii
  • The Expected Result - Being able to cull and move to the next image with more than 2 images selected.
  • The Actual Result - The highlight always moves back to the first image in a group when filtering rejected photos out, and using the x to mark rejects.

I did find a temporary workaround until a fix is available. Simultaneously pressing the shift key and the 'x' key will delete the photo and advance to the next image just as it does when no filter is active.

I'm experiencing the same bug and I also find that holding shift when pressing X restores the normal behavior.

Hope this is fixed soon, very disruptive to my culling workflow.

Hello,

After the most recent update to 14.5 there seems to be a weird change.

Example:

- If I have a group of images selected

- One of the 5 selected is on the loop view

- If I click x to reject flag that image

- The image rejects

- But instead of going to the next image in the selection of 5, the active image jumps to the first in the group.

This wasn't like this previously, is this a bug or a setting that I can change, I liked how it was before, so I could continue culling that group of images without needing to remember where I was in the grouping of images.

Cheers!

"Previously, I marked (N) images with an x in the overview, and Lightroom would jump to the next image when I set the filter to show only unmarked images. After the latest update, it now unfortunately always jumps to the first of the selected images."

Adobe has acknowledged this bug in LR 14.5.  Some report that as a workaround, hold down the Shift key.

This behaviour started with the 14.5 update. Strange this doesn't seem to be reported yet, seen how annoying this (new and probably unwanted) behaviour is.

The settings/situation that describe this issue when I'm culling:

  • I'm in loupe view on my main screen, and in grid view on my secondary screen.
  • The selected attributes are Flagged and Unflagged. So when I reject an image it is removed from the currently shown images.
  • I have a number of images selected, and I browse through them using the arrow keys. When I see a picture I don't like, I press X to reject the image. The image is removed from the shown images, but the currently selected image will suddenly become the first in the selected range. Now every time I reject an image, I have to go find the image that comes after the one I rejected. This induces a huge time loss during culling.
Before it always used to jump to the next image after the one that got rejected (strongly preferred behaviour).

I tried resetting the Lightroom settings, but that didn't solve it.

An acknowledgement of this issue is more than welcome, and a quick solution even more 😉

My platform: Lightroom Classic 14.5 on Windows 11.

When in survey mode and looking through a group of selections in a filtered collection, if I change the star rating of the file the full screen view displays the first image selected in the selection group rather than the next selected image.  Prior to this issue, the next selected image was displayed.

For example.  Let's say I have a filter in place that only selects images that are rated 2 stars or above.  The following images are selected from the Library module: 1,2,3,4,5.  Image 1 is the currently high-lighted image in the selection. I enter survey mode ("N") and then view images in full-screen preview and start viewing each image.  I get to image 3 and decide to rate it as a 1 star (no longer meeting the filter criteria).  The full screen view now changes to display image 1.  This should go to image 4.

This is obviously very annoying behaviour when you have a selection of 40 images that you are culling and everytime you demote an image, you are dropped back to the first image of the set.

I have only noticed this behaviour in the latest version of LRC.

I am running LRC 14.5 on Windows 11.
