P: Compare mode "Down arrow" destroys selection

Explorer ,
Aug 14, 2025 Aug 14, 2025

Since upgrading to 14.5 today, the "down arrow" key in Compare mode has regressed.  Very frustrating, completely disrupts my preferred workflow.

  1. Open a folder with >few images
  2. Expand the film strip (so you can see the selection later)
  3. "C" for compare mode
  4. (Not broken - demo:) Use Right and Left arrow keys to advance the candidate
  5. (Not broken - demo:) Use the Up arrow key to promote the candidate
  6. Use the Down arrow key to swap selection/candidate - THEN:
  7. Press Right arrow key twice

Actual behavior:

  • 3 photos are selected (wrong behavior)
  • Henceforth, Left/Right arrow keys can only toggle between the 3 selected photos. (Compare mode only works when 2 photos are selected, as has always been the case)
  • Up arrow key no longer work at all ("Bonk" sound plays indicating invalid input, no change to selection)
  • Can't continue to use Compare mode

Workaround: you're stuck until you clear the selection (Cmd+D), or deselect all but the primary selection (Cmd+Shift+D).  Issue: this loses your place in the film strip, so I have to waste time finding my place again.

Expected behavior:

  • Only 2 photos remain selected after pressing the Down arrow key
  • Can continue to use Compare mode without interruption

Note: pressing the Down arrow key twice does not cause the issue.  It only breaks after pressing Down an odd number of times.

LR Classic version: 14.5

MacOS version: Tahoe 26.0 beta (25A5327h) [worked fine with LRC 14.4]

I can reproduce the behavior using your instructions. (nicely written bug report btw). I've logged a ticket with the team.

Hi all! The update to Lightroom Classic v14.5.1 is now available and includes a fix for this issue.

If you don’t see the update in your Creative Cloud app, refresh it using Ctrl/Cmd + Alt/Opt + R.

Note: It may take up to 24 hours for the update to show up.

Thanks for your patience.

I’ve had the same experience. It’s now useless and has stopped me in my tracks while working on a 60,000+ photo project. There seem to be “new” white and black diamonds in the select and compare filmstrip.

Thanks, I'm not the best writer but I do know a thing or two about bug reports.  Fingers crossed for 14.5.1!

I just noticed the Up Arrow key is also broken after using the Left Arrow key.  It seems the real issue is that it breaks any time the Candidate selection is to the left of the primary selection.

Therefore, Compare Mode has regressed to the point of being completely dysfunctional with 14.5 (unless you're very stritctly moving left-to-right).
