P: Later loading of the color scheme of a photo rather than the photo itself

Since the latest version of Lightroom 3.0, it has been introduced that a photo loads faster than its actual colour. Sometimes I have to wait a second after opening a photo to get the correct colouring. This is very annoying as it's hard to focus on comparing the photo against the previous one. Is it possible to turn this off somehow? I would prefer to wait even a second for a photo to appear already with the correct colour scheme rather than initially having to preview a false version.

Of course, this is about Lightroom version 13, not version 3.

A suggestion to try- When you import your photos to the Catalog- Set the File Handling to Build previews that are "Standard" or "1:1".

This will force LrC to build the preview with colors as determined by LrC (as in set profiles or Presets).

2023-10-19 09_17_42-Lightroom.jpg

Using "Embedded & Sidecar" means that the camera generated preview remains visible until an image is edited, resulting in that "wait a second".

Why do I see my images change after they are imported into Lightroom? | Laura Shoe's Lightroom Train...

Regards. My System: Lightroom-Classic 14.0, Photoshop 26.0, ACR 17.0, Lightroom 8.0, Lr-iOS 9.0.1, Bridge 15.0.0, Windows-11.

Thank you for your response.

Unfortunately, my problem is primarily with the already created directories. I am a wedding photographer and I select everything on the fly - I also give away the trailer. I currently have about 25 created directories where this problem occurs. Is it possible to apply these settings to already created catalogs? Before upgrading Lightroom to version 13, this problem did not occur and everything displayed instantly. Now with each photo I have to wait about 0.5-1 sec for it to update to the color scheme I applied to the photo. This greatly distorts the perception of the photo making adjustments photo by photo.

I see this too. It takes about 0.5 seconds for a photo to show the final edits. This has nothing to do with embedded previews (that I never use). When the photo is displayed, I initially do see some edits, but it's as if the 'final touch' needs that extra half second for some reason. Maybe it's masks or some other AI stuff that needs a final quick check, I have no idea.

When I go to the next image in my timeline a bland version of my photo shows up then after a second the colors load in. This was not an issue previously.

This is exactly the point.

When looking through 600 photos one after the other it distorts the view a lot.

In fact, my eyes are unable to look at it and get tired much faster. It's very annoying.

Is anyone able to help?

@JohanElzenga  Are you seeing it on Mac or Win - the OP is on Win?

I'm seeing it on my MBP 16" M1 Max, just like another person in this thread. The OP is using Windows however, so it does not seem to be specific to one computer model or even one OS.

I am struggling to reproduce this. Are you in Library - Loupe or Develop?

Hi @Rikk Flohr: Photography I have been in Paris for two day with only my iPad, so I could not check this. This should be Loupe view in the Library, because I know that loading an image in the Develop module can give a slight delay, which is perfectly acceptable.  I'll investigate it a bit further this weekend and maybe record a screen video.

I will make an effort to assist you. The delay in loading colors primarily manifests in the Develop tab. Previously, there was indeed a delay, but it was related to the photo itself rather than the loading of colors. This was tolerable. However, the current issue involves a delay in loading the accurate colors and settings for the photo. This is difficult to accept, especially when making final adjustments for a photo-by-photo comparison in a reportage. The absence of loaded colors immediately alters the perception of the image. Such an occurrence was not present before upgrading to Lightroom 13. I am operating on a PC with Windows 11. If you require any information regarding the hardware, please let me know.

Yes, I did not remember this correctly. It's when you move from image to image in the Develop module, not Library-Loupe view. It's so short that I assume this might be as expected because the develop module does not use previews like the other modules, but has to load what you see from the Camera Raw cache. The only thing that is different from before (and so it is more noticeable) is that it appears like the final color is loaded after everything else. I do not see an 'undeveloped' image first, but an edited image that is slightly less saturated than should be, and then after this brief delay it's updated to the final view. Maybe the something changed in how the Camera Raw cache is built up or loads?

It's perhaps a reasonable assumption is that "final color" means the final conversion into the monitor profile. But what encoding is used to send the initial image from the ACR cache to screen I don't know.

Anyway, I'm not seeing as much as a trace of this here in Lr 13.0.1 and Windows 10. The correct color displays consistently.

It could be anything. The only point is that I did not see it in earlier versions. To be honest: the effect is so brief that it does not bother me personally.

The question then is whether, since this effect didn't exist before and it was better, does it have to be now? 🤔

@Rikk Flohr: Photography Me is seen it on Win. It is in dev. Depending on the size of the file, CR3 vs TIFF is takes 0.2 to 0.8s. If I generate smart previews, it is faster for TIFF files. The problem is still there but the good color came faster. No problem in library So I assume it is not linked to previews but to the Dev Rendering module

I am still unable to replicate this failure. I've tried Tiff and raw on Windows and do not see any change in color rendering during the Develop image load. I am testing this on a older machine with a tired graphics card.

1. Work on a catalogue with lots of photos
2. Ensure that the photos viewed in the Develop tab are processed
3. When switching photos, you should see a loading symbol in the right corner underneath the photo - when the symbol is visible, colour loading is in progress

I will send a video if necessary

Hello @Rikk Flohr: Photography  a short video showing the problem. I have a decent configuration. AMD 5900X 64GB of RAM and 4060ti with 16GB of RAM. The problem is more visible in 4K with PS openened. LrC seems to take time to render the good color of the preview in dev mode only. https://youtu.be/l8uoA9P-4ds The worse case is at 1m32s with nearly 2s delay

Thank you @ouiouiphoto, that's exactly the effect I'm after!

However, I find it most bothersome when comparing the photos one by one. As a wedding photographer, I have processed 500 photos and I'm examining whether the material is consistent. As I move on to the next photo, I focus my gaze to compare and... my eyes bleed.

I've been seeing this since v12 at least but probably longer. When initially loading in develop it shows the image with a white balance that is way off (image is very blue) just for half a second. It's just a momentary flash but like OP it messes with your color perception. This only happens to images that have never been taken into develop before and it doesn't matter what kind of preview you built. This is not a big deal to me but I have wondered what it was and I just wrote it off as loading of the raw data onto the GPU stack and the rendering stack being built as one is watching. This is on a 16" M1 Max MBP 32 GB.
