P: LR4 doesn't display point curve adjustments made in LR3

LEGEND ,
Mar 06, 2012 Mar 06, 2012

After updating from LR3, LR4 has reset my tone curves. I use custom tone curves on almost every picture, and all my contrast treatments this way seem to have gone. Initially the previews were still the old ones, so I only noticed after opening several pictures in the develop module, just to see my meticulous tone curve adjustments be removed.

Is anyone else seeing this?

I'am not looking for a script. What I want is a tool that works fine and is downward compatible with LR3.

Good...so I suggest to wait you until Adobe will release LR4.1.

Yeah, you're right. In the final version even I would appreciate a more convenient version - and I am a techie 😉

Just run the script on a test LR3 catalog that had 4 images with different curve settings: Normal, Linear, Strong and Custom.

POSITIVE:
1. The script will correctly update Strong and Custom. Will leave Normal alone, as it should.

NEGATIVE:
1. The script will not update Linear.
2. The script will not update any image that has already been touched in LR4 Develop or Quick Develop, even if not updated to 2012.

So, there's room for improvement.

Update: That is for raw files. For Jpegs, it's the Medium that escapes restoring.

Tom, is there any update on this please? The last update was 4 days ago.

Yes Chris. I am also very frustrated. I use the point curve on most of my photographic art. Lightroom 4 has destroyed dozens of my best art.

Most likely not destroyed, just not available after upgrade.

Give them time to test internally and with the people that have volunteered to test the fix. I'm sure they'll release it when they're confident that it's working properly.

Thanks for everyone's patience. Here's the latest update:
1. The script appears to be working properly and I'd like to thank those who tested it on their own catalogs.

2. The script is only intended to restore the point tone curve as applied in PV2010. There is some confusion over how a tone curve migrates from PV2010 to PV2012 and I'm working on a blog post to explain the change in terminology and visual appearance of the curve.

3. In our next update we will have corrected the catalog upgrade process so that this doesn't happen to future upgrades from Lightroom 3 to Lightroom 4. We're also working on a solution that will automatically "heal" any existing catalogs that have already been upgraded from Lightroom 3 to Lightroom 4.(No need to download or run a script, it will be built directly into Lightroom 4)

4. I do not have a time frame for the updates mentioned above so if there is sufficient interest I will attempt to make the script and instructions for manual catalog correction available via our tech support pages as quickly as possible.

Regards,
Tom Hogarty

Good news, thanks Tom. I would also like instructions for the manual catalog correction. Given the number of people upgrading, I think it's safe to assume that there will be sufficient interest!

Cheers,
Scott

Very interested here as well - if not the corrective script, some process/procedure to at least identify affected images would be very helpful.

Tom,

What about the issue with Linear (Raws) and Medium (JPGEs) curve settings not being restored by the script, which Dorin reported a few posts above? I experienced the same problem and also reported it.

Tom,
Does any of this apply to brand new users to LR 4 who previously applied tone curves using RAW 6.6 or earlier? I just bought LR 3 in Feb. and was upgraded to LR 4 but have not set up anything just yet. I installed LR4 and am in the processing configuring it. I don't want to screw up the thousands of files I have in Bridge when I set up LR4 and transfer them for the first time. Should I wait until a fix is out?

I would like to have the script. How can I get it if there isn't enough interest for you to post on tech support?

Please provide a link to the tech support pages.

Agreed, although IMHO those should be separated out, because the processing in LR4 might have been done on a wrong base.

frankly I don't know if redistribute the script is correct: I received it directly from Adobe and I suggest to wait for something "official", public ... and deeply tested!

I don't think redistributing is bad: everybody knows this is an alpha-test, so entirely at our own risk.
Dorin & Beat have published what this script succeeds in doing and what is still not solved by it.

So whoever wants to give it a try knows what to expect.
The risk-averse better wait for LR4.1, how long ever that will be...

Yes, I agree with Beat: if I have touched an image in LR4 I have made conscious changes (no matter if I decided to still leave it at PV10). Auto-changing them back would be rather dangerous...
If I want the script to pick such an image I have first to go back to it in LR4-develop and set its history some steps back to where LR3 left off.
