Hi,

LRC 12.2.1 is not starting anymore, just launches as a background process using significant amounts of RAM and CPU, but the visible window never shows up.

I have already:

- Tried the alt-shift-click thingie.

- Tried logging out and in from CC.

- Wiping all data files from the computer and letting LRC create a fresh Lightroom folder and catalog file (sometimes it does that, sometimes it hangs before the folder is created).

- Wiping all Adobe products with the cleaner tool and reinstalling just LRC.

- I have even formatted and reisntalled the computer (becuase it was a good time to do that anyway).

But LRC still fails. What to do next?

One of our Prerelease Testers has a bug logged for this and we've referenced this thread to that existing bug.

Workaround:
The team has verified this workaround has no risks. Until we can release an update, please follow these steps:

  • Close LrC if open
(the file will not show if Lightroom is open)

  • Locate metrics.json file at this location:

    Mac: /Users/<username>/Library/Caches/Adobe/Lightroom/metrics.json
(Note that Mac has two Libraries
Make sure you are in the User Library and not the System

Greetings all,

Updates for Adobe Photography products have been released.  The April 2023 updates contain a final fix for this issue. After installing 12.3 it should be no longer necessary to monitor and delete the metrics.json file.

If you do not see the update in your Creative Cloud Application, you can refresh it by hitting [Ctrl/Cmd]+[Alt/Opt]+[ R ].

Note: It may take up to 24 hours for your update to be available in your Creative Cloud app.

Thank you for your patience.

I did all this and IT WORKED !!! Well, I did all this but I had forgotten to deleted the 10GB metrics.json file first. Then, I simply deleted it (actually renamed it ".bak" ... good old MS DOS still in my veins lol) and it worked without having to uninstall and reinstalls...

I'm having to delete those json files on a regular basis now. It doesn't seem to slow down or reset anything that I can see, but I'm beginning to think there's a problem with using both Lightroom and Lightroom Classic at the same time.

I've had a new MacBook Pro 13" running on an M2 chip with MacOS 13.2.1 Ventura for a couple weeks now and I am unable to even start Lightroom Classic.

I've done every single recommended thing, clear the preferences, wipe the Adobe Cloud completely off the drive, uninstall and reinstall everything about 10 times but to no avail. Disk access etc. has also been given to LrC as per recommendations...

When I open LrC (doesn't matter if via icon or through the Adobe Cloud app) it goes straight to a seemingly blank application which is unable to do anything and I can't close the app normally, I have to force quit it.

I've been to the Genius Bar with the device and Apple has assured me nothing is wrong with the computer, so it has to be an Adobe issue!

While at Apple we tried setting up a test user profile and weirdly we were able to open the app there but not in the actual user profile.

Please help, otherwise I will cancel my subscribtion.

Attached a screenshot of what it looks like when I try to open LrC...

It's clearly a serious bug in 12.2.1. So many people have the issue I am surprised Adobe still has not released a point release to fix this. Deleting the cache folders are the only way I could get LRC to open.

Clearly it has to do with having both LR and LRCC running at the same time.

Adobe has some many major issues like the memory one. It is a HUGE issue on both Mac and Windows (I am using both).

@Ana Martinez and @lewisfrancis, if Adobe's on its normal schedule, we should expect to see a new version of LR this week or next. You might wait to see if that new version addresses your issue, and if not, start new threads describing your problems. Your posts here are buried in a thread about "metrics.json", which may have nothing to do with your problems.

See the bug:

https://community.adobe.com/t5/lightroom-classic-bugs/p-lrc-12-2-1-fails-to-start-launch-or-is-extre...

  • Note that this can be for both Windows and MAC
  • Note that this can be for both LrC will not start or LrC is very slow all of a sudden
  • Note that the possible bug is under investigation
  • Note that Adobe states the possible solution attempted is not damaging
  • Temporary fix while waiting for a LrC update to remedy the bug involves deleting or moving a specific CACH file named “metrics.json
  • Note that this file may not exist if LrC is running
  • Note that this file appears to be created if you have not opted out at Adobe.com from the Desktop App Usage .
  • Recommend that if you opt out from the Desktop App Usage, that you check back later to see that it sticks.

Directions as follows:

  1. Close LrC.
  2. On the web, bring up Adobe.com. Sign in if you are not already signed in.
  3. Select the Privacy tab. Turn off the option Desktop App Usage > Share Information On How I Use Adobe Desktop Apps.
  4. Restart your computer, thus insuring that LrC is not running in background for some reason.
  5. Delete the file “metrics.jon”.

This file is located at:

Win: C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Adobe\Lightroom\Caches\metrics.json

Mac: /Users/<username>/Library/Caches/Adobe/Lightroom/metrics.json

For MACOS users, this file is by default hidden. One way around that as follows:

  • In Finder, do the menu command Go > Go To Folder:
  • Type in (copy/paste)

           ~/Library/Caches/Adobe/Lightroom

  • Hit the return key
  • If not already, select the menu command View > Details
  • Delete the file "metrics.json”

6. Start LrC

Thanks for the advice. I would consider downgrading only as a last resort. Yes, Ventura is riddled with bugs, but the thought of downgrading isn't very enticing either if there is another easier solution!

Actually, I spoke too soon. This workaround does allow Lightroom to launch again, but as soon as I try to work on a photo in the Develop module, it starts slowing down again. And if I quit and restart, the app won't restart unless I delete the metric.json file again. So unfortunately it's only a partial solution. At least it can be made to start up, so thanks for that.

Update: deleting the metrics.json file only allows the application to start up again. Unfortunately it still starts to slow down again. And I need to delete the metrics.json file every time I want to start up the application!

Did you skip the first steps?

  1. Close LrC.
  2. On the web, bring up Adobe.com, sign in if you are not already signed in.
  3. Select the Privacy tab. Turn off the option Desktop App Usage > Share Information On How I Use Adobe Desktop Apps.

I have a problem with Lightroom Classic using any version after V12 on Windows 10

Lightroom won't open when clicking the icon but is visible in the background in task manager. The more I click, the more instances of the program appear but only one seems to use the CPU. I had to download the version before V12(11.5 I think) in order for Lightroom Classic to open but this is not a workaround as I have catalogs that need the recent version. When trying to open Lightroom, I have to log back into the CC desktop app and a new PC location to sign in but shows the previous login minutes before. I'm thinking this might be an activation program syncing with CC. I am trying to sync a catalog at the moment but it's not showing in the other Lightroom or on my Ipad?

I have tried resetting the preferences on the startup of Lightroom, does nothing. I have tried uninstalling Lightroom Classic and installing it again. I have removed the desktop app and all Adobe products for a fresh install but the problem remains. I have also got Windows and graphics card up to date, and done a defrag.

I have tried creating a new catalog in V11.5 and then installing V12.2.1 to upgrade the catalog on restart. The grey upgrade catalog box does appear, but nothing loads on it and I just get a spinning blue circle like it's waiting for something. After a while my computer starts to run really slow and I can't move my mouse.

Any help is appreciated.

my LRC startup is terribly slow and takes 5 minutes

- after starting LRC it waits for 5 minutes until it opens

- after that it behaves normally

- on MacOS Ventura

- independent from which VR catalog is used (small or large)

during the 5 minute startup time the process says "Lightroom Classic (not responding)" and it uses 80-100 % cpu, which means it uses one cpu core

- the problem appeared after i tried to connect one LR catalog to the adobe cloud to sync down images from the cloud into the LRC catalog. That worked in the first place but became slower and slower with more images (RAW) in the cloud. I went back to a catalog backup before I had it connected to the Adobe cloud. But since then LRC takes it's 5 minute wait until it opens

- absolutely not acceptable for a professional software

Did you try starting LrC with a new catalog?

Hold down Ctrl while opening Lightroom. This shows a dialog where you can check catalogs or create a new one.

"Lightroom won't open when clicking the icon but is visible in the background in task manager." I think this is a Windows issue. I've run into it with various programs over the years on W10. In my case, a reboot fixed the issue.

I'd suggest checking the update status of your system including graphics card drivers. Also, check your event manager for other potential clues.

Yeah, I tried that. I just found the fix, I had to rename or delete this file (metrics.json).  It's on this thread below:

There is no such file in the mentioned directory and there is no such option "Menu commend view details" so I am unable to perform the herein suggested bugfix. Extremely unhelpful merging all these tickets into one by the way...
