P:LRC Tethering with z6III captures 2 JPEG files but using Z6III with NX Tether captures NEF + JPEG?

I'm trying to learn how to get the most from my new Z6III and was using the LRC 14.3.1 "tethering" functionality but realised it was always capturing two JPEG files ecen though camera set to RAW+JPEG. I switched to using NX Tether 2.3 and without making any changes to the camera find that it captures an NEF and a JPEG file. Am I doing somethi ng wrong or is it a bug in LRC?

in the future, to find the best place to post your message, use the list here, https://community.adobe.com/

p.s. i don't think the adobe website, and forums in particular, are easy to navigate, so don't spend a lot of time searching that forum list. do your best and we'll move the post (like this one has already been moved) if it helps you get responses.

Hi @david267032040cgl!

Could you share a few more details about what’s going on? Knowing which version of Lightroom Classic you're using would be super helpful. And if you’re able to include a screenshot of your import dialog settings, that would give us a better idea of what might be happening.

Thanks so much!
Alek

Aleke, as I mentioned in my post I'm using LRC 14.3.1.

I tethered my Z6III to LRC 14.3.1 which worked ok and set up my image using "live view", on capturing the picture two images appear in the target folder but both were JPEGS; my camera was set up to capture RAW + JPEG. Without switching my camera off or changing any of its settings I opened up NX Tether 2.3.0 and used its "live view" to capture the same image and place the images in to the same target folder, this time I got a NEF file and a JPEG as expected.

Regards David

Hi @david267032040cgl, thanks for the update! I just want to confirm, you are no longer getting the double JPEGS when you tether? Thanks! ^CH

@david267032040cgl

I have a Nikon Z8 and shoot only RAW. I haven't had a problem with LrC's Tethered Capture. However, ...

I changed my Camera setting to shoot "RAW + JPEG/HEIF fine" and took a shot. I got two JPEG images with sequential numbers, just as you did. In the target folder there are two separate JPEG files and no NEF file. This is clearly wrong.

In Preferences on the General tab, I had the option "Treat JPEG files next to raw files as separate photos" checked.  I unchecked this option, saved Preferences and shot a second Tethered Capture. This time I only got the RAW file imported into LrC with a JPEG sidecar. In the target folder there is a JPEG and a NEF file, as expected.

There's a bug there for sure.

In the mean time, change your Preference setting and uncheck "Treat JPEG files next to raw files as separate photos".

@Aleke, @Claire H.

I'm sorry, but both of you demonstrate a complete lack of understanding of the issue reported by @david267032040cgl .

This issue is not restricted to Nikon Z cameras. I just tested using my Nikon D750 and the result is the same.

No the problem hasn't gone away. LRC gives me 2 JPEG files but NX Tether gives me a NEF and a JPEG file so something is happening with LRC that I don't understand.

I changed the Preference setting as you suggested and now I get a JPEG and a NEF file when using LRC tethering. What I did notice though is that when I had the Preference set to "Treat JPEG files next to raw files as separate photos" it displayed both of the JPEG files in the Library tab. When I switched off that Preference and reshot a picture it gave me the NEF + JPEG files in the target folder but only displayed one image in the Library module and the file name for that one inmage has a file type of "NEF+JPEG". I've added a screen shot of what I'm seeing in LRC now.

I think I'll stick with NX Tether until this one gets fixed as its hurting my brain 🙂

@david267032040cgl

This issue with two JPEG files being imported by Tethered Capture is a bug and I expect it will be fixed in a future update.

The strange file type 'NEF+JPEG" is as designed and has always been that way. It signifies that there is a RAW NEF photo that has been imported into the catalog and along side it, in the same folder, there is a JPEG version that has not been imported.

If you need the NEF and JPEG files imported as separate photos, then enable the option "Treat JPEG files next to raw files as separate photos" and use Nikon's NX Tether until the bug is fixed in lrC.
