P: Map Module not working 11.3.1 on some Windows installations

Windows 11 21H2

If you shut down Lightroom Classic 11.3.1 with the Library Module showing, then re-launch later, the Map Module works fine.

If you shut down Lightroom Classic 11.3.1 with the Map Module showing, and then re-launch later, the Map Module is not usable. The exact form of the error changes, its not always the same, sometimes I get JavaScript error, sometimes the Map Module just freezes, other times it has other errors, but the Map Module simply doesn't work in this situation.

Try going to Library, then exiting LR.  After restarting LR, does the Map now work?  Many on Windows, and a few on Mac, have observed that the Map module can start behaving badly if you last exited LR from the Map module.

@Rikk Flohr: Photography It would sure be helpful if you told us what the version NUMBER of your new nVidia driver is.

I just downloaded and installed nVidia driver 511.65 and the problem has not gone away.

I think Rikk may have been fortunate with the GPU update. I'm 99% sure that the issue is as I mentioned above. The fact that John captured the error mentioned that he did is the key.

My test was run within a Windows 10 virtual machine hosted on Mac OS Parallels -- the graphics driver is the one installed in Windows by Parallels.

Same experience for me in Windows 11 - my report is in this thread.

11.3 and 11.3.1 have consistent issues with the Map Module failing during use.

Rolled back to LRC 11.2, have not seen an incident so far.

Map Module works normally on my Win10 system, so maybe an issue restricted to 11.3.1 on Win11?

I believe it's the same issue as discussed at https://community.adobe.com/t5/lightroom-classic-discussions/map-module-not-working-11-3-1-windows-1...

The map initialisation process was changed in 11.3. Some customers are affected by the change and others aren't.

And I'm running AMD, so it is not nVidia specific.

By @dj_paige

Apparently, there is an ever newer nVidia driver, 512.15, for my GPU. I installed that, and the problem has not gone away.

I've just seen this problem in LR 11.3.1 on my Mac (macOS 11.6.5, iMac 15.1, AMD Radeon R9)

I got here by googling the first messages I saw, "unable to connect to adobe servers"/"map module will not work", but having tried closing Lightroom down with the map module open, on re-opening it this time I saw that error message, followed by a map view, but then the map module appeared to stop updating—I can scroll around the "map" and all I see is black around the single apparently static map image (tiles?) that loaded. Closing LR down from the Library module and re-opening seems to have made the Map module work again.

Seems Maps has went back in time. My home in the map is from 7 years ago when my house was under construction. It used to be current picture before this update. Annoying....

What year shows for the copyright in the lower-right corner?

I think that typically indicates the year the imagery was processed.  I don't think Adobe has any control over that, but I could be wrong.

Interesting. LR is displaying whatever Google sends it, so I think it likely this is an issue on Google's end.

Have you tried going to Google Maps and seeing what image it shows for the same location? There used to be a way you could choose the date of the satellite image allowing you to look at changes over time; it might be that Google has changed it's default or Adobe is fetching maps from a different date for some reason.

Right after I posted that date I went to google and it shows a current image of my house.

An hour later when I went back into lightroom it is now showing the correct image, very strange.

Smells like a Google issue.

Map stopped working after upgrade to 11.3. Had to roll back to 11.2 for it to work. I have Windows 10 Home version 21H1

Everything in maps works on my end. What exactly happens, or does not happen? "Stopped working" is very unspecific.

Thank you for responding, I have added this in the bug as you suggest. In answer to your question, after upgrading to 11.3 I tried to use the map module but it simply showed an unresponsive image of the world and said "unable to connect to adobe servers. map module will not work". But I had internet connection.

@CliveYet, try the workaround described in that thread: Start LR, go to the Library module, restart LR.  That works for most people.
