P: Presets containing Camera Standard are incorrectly marked partially incompatible for newer Nikons

LEGEND ,
Jan 04, 2025 Jan 04, 2025

For some newer Nikons, presets containing the Camera Standard profile are incorrectly indicated as partially incompatible.  The cameras for which I've observed this happening are the Z f, Z 6 III, Z 50 II, and the Z 8 (the most recently reviewed Nikons at dpreview.com). It doesn't happen with older Nikons.

Tested with LR 14.1.1 and LR 13.5.1 / Mac OS. To reproduce:

1. Download and open this catalog, which contains a raw for each of the problem Nikons:

https://www.dropbox.com/s/guhjzylef1qslsc/italicized-preset.2025.01.04.zip?dl=0

2. Open the first photo in Develop.

3. Make a preset "Untitled Preset" with just Treatment & Profile selected. Observe in the Presets panel that the preset name "Untitled Preset" is italicized (incorrect).

4. Repeat for the other three photos.

Weird thing happening. If I create a preset with Camera Standard or Flat profile, the name is shown in italic. If I change to other profile and update the preset, the font type returns to normal. I don't know if it happens in othe profiles, but it does with these two.

Hey, @cav_xtra. Welcome to the Lightroom Community. We've moved your post to discussion for now. I'll clarify this for you.

It is usual for preset names to appear in italics when the preset is partially compatible or when the preset includes a Profile. Here is a conversation about this: https://adobe.ly/4gzMYEs

Thanks!

If the preset name is shown in italics, then that means that the preset is incompatible with the currently selected image. Most likely the chosen profile is camera-specific and right now you have selected an image from a different camera. Another possibility is that you have selected a non-raw file, so the profile cannot be used for that type of image.

No.. It only happens with these two profiles and it has been working for years. It suddenly started showing as italic

So what type of image (raw, camera model) did you have selected when you created the profile and what type of image do you have selected right now (raw, jpeg, camera model) when you see the name in italics?

@JohanElzenga Any NEF from a Zf (it was the one I tried). The profile name gets immediately in italic for the exact same image and similars. I update it with another profile and goes back to normal (see video)

Strange. That suggests there's something wrong with that profile, that makes Lightroom Classic think it's incompatible with that same image.

It seems to be a problem with the latest release.

The problem occurs for recent Nikons but not older ones, and it occurs in LR 13.5.1 as well as 14.1.1.  I filed a bug report:

Hi Rikk,

This exact issue has been frustrating me for months - and I've just now come across this thread.

Wondering if or when we may be able to expect a fix for this.

Note - I shoot with a Nikon Z 6 III

Thanks

Brett

This has been happening to me with my new Nikon Z8 and Nikon Zf.

This bug only seems to happen when I create a preset with the "Camera Standard" profile.

Lightroom version: 14.5.1
System: MacBook Pro M2 Max, OS: Sequoia 15.6.1

I just tested the bug recipe in LR 14.5.1 / Mac OS 15.7.1 and observe the same misbehavior.  LR 15 will likely arrive in two weeks during Adobe MAX (10/28).

LATEST

I still see presets created with Nikon Z8 NEF files showing italics names even when the same file a preset was created with is still selected. Interestingly, presets created with iPhone HEIC images are never in italics even when a Z8 NEF image is selected. (Lightroom Classic version: 15.0)
