P: "Unknown error" for Denoise and Distraction Removal after .lrcat-data file is deleted; LR hangs

In LR 15.1, after deleting the catalog's .lrcat-data file, photos with Denoise or Distraction Removal applied show the error message "An unknown error occurred" in Develop.  Trying to do Update AI Settings in Library hangs LR, requiring a force quit.  This doesn't occur with the other AI commands, nor does it occur in LR 15.0.1.

This bug makes recovery of corrupted .lrcat-data files harder, forcing the user to wait for Adobe Support to repair their catalog.

(Note that Denoise and Distraction Removal use the FilterList setting internally.)

To reproduce with LR 15.1 / Mac OS 15.7.1:

1. Download this tiny catalog:

https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fi/jm9r26rn62qffkc02q5b8/update-ai-settings-bug.2026-01-12.zip?rlkey=y0q8h9iysj9045f490cjtxobr&dl=0

2. Uncompress the catalog and open it in LR 15.1.

3. Open the photo in Develop.

4. Apply one of these AI commands: Denoise, Distraction Removal > Reflections, > People, or > Dust.

5. Exit LR, delete the .lrcat-data file from the catalog folder, restart LR. Click Continue in response to the warning.  Observe in Develop the error message "An unknown error occurred" (incorrect).

6. Go to Library and do Photo > Develop Settings > Update AI Settings.  Observe the Update AI Settings dialog appears but makes no progress (incorrect).

7. Click Stop and observe the dialog never exits.  You have to force-quit LR.

8. Repeat steps 2-7 with LR 15.0.1 and observe there is no error in step 5 and doing Update AI Settings works correctly.

A workaround:

1. Exit LR and delete the .lrcat-data file from the catalog folder.

2. Start LR 15.0.1.

3. Select all photos in Library Grid view (not Library Loupe, not Develop) and do Photo > Develop Settings > Update AI Settings and wait (a potentially long time).

4. Restart LR.

5. For each photo with Distraction Removal > People, open the People panel. For each pin representing a removed person, click on it and do Generate.

6. Repeat step 3.

I confirmed the problem doesn't occur in LR 15.1.1 / Mac OS 26.2.

I loaded 15.1.1 on my Windows 11 Machine (Dell) on January 24th.  A nightmare ensued.  Everything slowed down to a crawl, I really couldn't edit and required a short lifetime to go from thumbnail to thumbnail.  After checking online, I decided to downgrade to 15.1.  There were many of the same problems.  Then, I downgraded to 15.0 and things started to stabilize but not perfect.  I couldn't believe that Adobe would distribute something that bad.  Then I started to give it some thought.  I ran my Dell update assistant, and found that I was far behind on several drivers and there was even a BIOS update that I hadn't loaded.  A huge thing is that a new driver had come out on my NVIDIA RTX 3070 graphics card.  I upgraded all of the drivers and the BIOS.  As soon as I did it, the machine was back to normal.  About an hour ago, I loaded 15.1.1 and it works fine.  All of us tend to be upset when Adobe releases buggy software... rightfully so.  However, before I load anymore upgrades, I am going to make sure that my machine is fully up to date.  It gets back to the old saying, GET YOUR HOUSE IN ORDER.

Heads up: I updated to 15.1.1 and the slow/lag problem got worse. The problem was reported and discussed here: https://community.adobe.com/t5/lightroom-classic-discussions/lightroom-classic-v15-0-amp-later-slow-in-develop-and-library-module-operations/m-p/15575633#M417338

While the suggested fixes have worked for some users, many (including me) are still struggling with the problem even after applying all the recommended fixes. What is even more frustrating is that after a while the problem did not occur as often (or as quickly after working in LR), but with version 15.1.1 the problem came back with a vengeance. It happens after only a few minutes of editing and the lag is so bad that it brings LR to a halt.

Greetings all,

A new update for the Adobe Photography products has been released.  The 15.1.1 (January) update contains an update regarding this issue.

If you do not see the update in your Creative Cloud Application, you can refresh it by pressing  [Ctrl/Cmd]+[Alt/Opt]+[ R ].

Note: It may take up to 24 hours for your update to be available in your Creative Cloud app.

Thank you for being so patient.

"Wait for a fix"

Or use the workaround with LR 15.0.1 described above to recreate the .lrcat-data file.

This issue also renders the affected photo(s) totally uneditable.

Anyone contemplating deleting the .lrcat-data, don't do it with LrC 15.1 unless you want to give yourself a huge headache.

Wait for a fix.
