P: Resizing window causes screen to flash in Develop module

Hi everybody!

I have been using Lightroom for over 10 years.

On my old laptop with Intel Core i7 4720HQ, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960M and 16 GB RAM, the screen was always slow when I zoomed in or out of the LR window and you could clearly see the individual parts of LR building up.

Now I have a brand new PC: AMD Ryzen 9950x, NVIDIA RTX 5070, 96 GB RAM. I assumed that everything would just load smoothly. It does, but not with LR Classic! GPU is activated in the settings of LR. Why is that?

    Frank, doesn't make any sense to me either...maybe because I'm a dev somebody used that as a selection criteria. Nonetheless adobe did acknowledge it finally after ignoring it for a long while.

    As a plugin dev I've seen this quite a bit and of course we get blamed for it. It not only happens as you quote but in other areas as well, most noticably when ALT-TAB to access other windows. The windows jump around and aren't selectable unless clicked on. It is worse when batch processing images in any manner.
    GPU toggle isn't a valid option either due to the nature of the LR beast....it's yet another upgrade issue based on code degradation creep dumped on the masses to make the marketers and bean counters happy.

    I am also experiencing a crazy noticeable slowdown of LR Classic on my i9 64gb ram Nvidia GeForce RTX 4070. Switching tools within develop module almost seems to cause a hang where it appears like LR almost has to reload the whole develop module over again each time...

    @Aleke: Thank you very much for your help and forwardig this issue to the Adobe dev team!

    Unfortunately the sp called work around isn't any solution for it. So let's hope that the dev team will find a solution and provide it with an update in the future.

    This issue reminds me on former times. When developers started programming GUIs using Java about 20 or 25 years ago, the difference in the speed of GUIs were similar to GUIs programmed in C++. 😉

     

    It would be great I you would provide me with an update if you'll get any news in regards to this issue from the dev team.

      Hi @dirkr30048664, @Frank Biganski, and anyone else experiencing this!

       

      I’ve passed this issue along to the Lightroom Classic dev team, and they confirmed it’s a known issue related to how drawing works in Windows. It’s tied to the Windows framework that Lightroom Classic uses, which isn’t very GPU-efficient. It’s not a hardware performance issue, so upgrading your system likely won’t make a difference (even though it might seem like it should).

       

      As a temporary workaround, you can try turning off “Use Graphics Processor” under Edit > Preferences > Performance. Just a heads-up though, this might impact performance in other parts of the app, so we understand it’s not a perfect fix.

       

      The team is actively looking into this. If anyone else is affected, feel free to chime in on this thread. It really helps us gauge how widespread the issue is and prioritize accordingly.

      When you get a chance, could you share your System Info with us? You can find it by going to Help > System Info in Lightroom Classic. Just copy the info into a text file and attach it here, or feel free to share it via Google Drive, WeTransfer, or any other file-sharing service you prefer.

      This is far away from being smooth.

      Working on photos is fast, that's not the problem. But the if I change the size of the LR window it's quite slow as before on my old hardware.

        Hi @dirkr30048664! Thanks a lot for sharing your System Info and the screen recording, that really helped me understand what you’re seeing.

        I was able to reproduce the issue on my end too. When you get a chance, could you try going to Edit > Preferences > Performance, then set Use Graphics Processor to Off, and see if the issue still happens?

        Hiya,
        I've been having this problem for a while but I've just lived with it. I found several responces to this issue but none of the suggestions seem to help.  When I am resizing Lightroom Classic display window, which I often fo during the initial set up of my workspaces, the preview window flashes.  See this sample video.

        I'm wondering if I may need to update my Nvidia 2060 Super graphics card or perhaps, increase my RAM from 32 GB. I edit property photo RAW images.

        First up an observation.Unfortunately this is probably not the cause or solution to your odd issue. But it does effect performance in the Develop Module. You have the default value of 5 GB for Camera RAW CACHE. Way too small. Adobe and many recommend increasing that to at least 20GB.

         

        Second an inquiry, does this odd behavior also occur in Library Module in Loupe view?

         

        Third, a common diagnostic is to turn off Use Graphics Processor, typically to see if the GPU driver is an issue, I suspect not. But perhaps give that a look.

         

        Final, at least two postings with similar issue, flickering in Develop, were solved by resetting the preference file. Perhaps consider trying that.
