P: (Windows-only) incorrectly rounds a capture date/time with fractional seconds of 0.99974

LR 15.0.1 / Windows incorrectly rounds a capture date/time of 11/13/25 10:30:03.99974 PM to 1/1/1601 4:00:00.477 PM.  But LR 15.0.1 / Mac correctly rounds it to 11/13/25 10:30:04.000 PM.

 

Tested on LR 15.0.1 / Windows 11 Intel, Windows 11 ARM, and Mac OS 15.7.1. To reproduce:

 

1. Download and open this catalog:

It contains two photos with these capture date/times:

subsec.dng:         2025:11:13 22:30:03.99974
subsec-smaller.dng: 2025:11:13 22:30:03.99900

 

2. Right-click the folder "pics" and do Synchronize Folder.

 

3. On Mac, observe the capture/date times of the two photos have been rounded correctly:

But on Windows 11, observe that the capture time of "subsec.dng" has been mangled to 1/1/1601 4:00:00.477:

During import, some, but not all files appear to have no date attached. Video file dates revert 1970 and raw files revert to 1601. 

 

When I look at the metadata of the original file in File Explorer, it seems to be correct. Below is an example:

That photo imports correctly into my LR 15.0.1 / Mac OS 15.7.1, both from a hard drive folder and from an SD card onto which I had copied the photo:

But examining its metadata, I see that its metadata has been modified by LR. Further, it contains these dates:

Without getting into all the gory details of what they mean, one field, XMP:CreateDate, doesn't match EXIF:Date/TimeOriginal (though it should).

 

1. Can you share a DNG directly from the camera that hasn't yet been imported into LR? (It's OK to look at it in the Import window to make sure that it's being mishandled, but don't complete the Import operation with it.)

 

2. Please post a full-resolution screenshot of the entire LR window with the Import window open showing the problem.

 

3. Please do the LR menu command Help > System Info and copy/paste the entire contents here so we can see exactly which versions of hardware and software LR thinks you're running and important LR options that are set.

The new sample S1010115.DNG also imports correctly into my LR 15.0.1:

Your screenshot shows you're importing via the Files section (the default) rather than the Devices section (a legacy method that sometimes gets dates wrong).  So the problem isn't that.

 

Exiftool shows all the metadata date/times are consistent.

 

1. Try placing a copy of that photo on your Desktop folder and import from there. Does it have the same problems?

 

2. The issue with your videos could be different. Video metadata isn't well-supported by LR.  Share a sample problem video and I'll take a look. It's ok to use a video that's already been imported, since LR never modifies metadata in video files.

Same issue if I move the file to the desktop. I'm a little less concerned about video, since I don't use dates to organize footage. 

 

So if it's working on your end, it's not an issue with the drone, correct?

I was stumped by this for a while. But finally, I tested on Windows, and this is the first metadata bug I recall in years that occurs on Windows but not Mac.  I'll post a bug report.

@Jake Frank, the video capture date problem you're observing may be the same as the bug with the DNGs. Please share a sample problem video and I'll confirm.

I modifiied one of my own test NEF files and found:

 

SubSecTimeOriginal <= 99950 gives the correct datetime

SubSecTimeOriginal > 99950 gives 1601-01-02 00:00:00 UTC

 

Go figure that one out. Some one has made a serious mathematical error here.

My NEF files have  EXIF:DateTimeOriginal, EXIF:SubSecTimeOriginal, EXIF:CreateDate and EXIF:SubSecTimeDigitized.

 

The SubSec fields are defined as the fractional seconds of the corresponding DateTime tag. The value 99974 must be interpreted as 0.99974 seconds.

 

How the LrC developers can get this so wrong as to produce a date 424 years ago is completely beyond me, but it certainly needs fixing quickly.

 

As for the video with a date 1970-01-01, that's the reference date for the Unix timestamp. LrC uses 2001-01-01 for its reference date, so that's also a mysterious error.
