All options greyed out suddenly while working on an image

Hi,

 

Newbie here, I don't use Lightroom Classic very often and have encountered this problem a few times...

 

After working on an image it seems to freeze, I feel like I have either locked it or corrupted it in LrC. Once the problem occurs I cannot get back into the image as all of the options are greyed out. It will not appear in the main window (see screenshot after reboot) and I seemingly lose all of my progress. This time it was adding a linear gradient that caused it to crash, I was adjusting the sliders and no effect was happening, once I closed it then I was locked out. The same thing happened on another image when I added the gradient.

 

Have I locked it? Is Lightroom crashing?

 

Would appreciate any help!

This is likely due to issues accessing the originals. How are you storing those? I.e. main ssd in the computer, external hard disk (how connected and how formatted), NAS server, etc.?

The graphics processor trick seems to have done it! 

 

What does this mean? Should I always leave it off?

No, that was just a test. You should strive to have it on as it makes an enormous difference in speed. When you see issues such as this and turning off the GPU fixed it, it often has to do with graphics drivers or bad monitor profiles. On Macs, GPU driver updates come with the operating system so start there by updating to the latest. Bad monitor profiles are fixed by recalibrating the display.

The first thing that you should try is to switch off the GPU support from the Lightroom preferences and check if that helps to fix the issue.

Go to Lightroom > Preferences > Performance tab > Uncheck "Use Graphics Processor" > Restart Lightroom.

Another step is to try to reset the Lightroom preferences.

If this also doesn't help we need more informations about your environment.

Please provide also a copy of your 'System Info'. This can be get from the LrC Help > System Info menu item. There's a copy button in the System Info dialog. Press this button and paste the info into your next forum post.

 

Do you get an error message? If yes, please post the exact message or an screenshot.
