Applying a user preset to all selected images

Engaged ,
Mar 28, 2025 Mar 28, 2025

Hey there,

I have recently created a preset using the Spyder Color Checker. I'm trying to apply said preset to all 200 images of the series other than by selecting each individually and clicking the preset. I've been working with LR since 10 years now, so I'm asking myself what's going on.

I have found all sorts of (outdated) guides on how to achieve this, since the logical way via "Sync" doesn't seem to work - via Develop module, Quick Develop etc. Once I click any other image than the "root" image to check, no matter what I sync, the preset isn't being applied automatically.

I just can't believe this can be that difficult. Please help. Thank you!

Win 10, most recent version of LR, 14.2 release,  the build of which for some reason I can't copy from the popup

Interesting - there is no other, logical way than a tiny switch I never used before? What astounds me the most is that you can't check "preset" in the sync popup.

Anyhow, this works fine, I thank you and my hair follicles praise you!

I never said "there is no ther logical way", there probably are. I don't see how the size of the switch is relevant here, Adobe provided the exact tool you want.

  1. Library Module>Grid Mode [ G]
  2. Select desired
  3. Go to Quick Develop Panel - Choose Preset from the "Saved Preset" Pulldown.

It may take a bit for the Library Previews to update.
If you go to Develop after applying the Preset, is the image updated?

I just tried it and it works as expected.

If you are applying a color checker-created profile - keep in mind it only applies to raw files and not to any 'baked' file. Are you sure they are all eligible for the Preset?

No - I tried this several times over the course of half an hour, and normally, changes take on immediately, i.e. a few seconds for a large batch. I usually either apply a preset on import, but imported on another computer (without said preset, though I'd expect all those presets to spread over all my systems through the Adobe Cloud, but that's a different story), copied the pictures o an SSD and imported without thinking of the preset then.

The images are all basically a stack of RAWs, same camera, same lens, same date, all the same.

Edit: I just tried the above workflow on another system and there it worked. But NOT with the Color Checker profile, whichdoesn't exist there. I'll try again tomorrow!

Edit 2: just turned back on to try.
I tried 2 folders: the Auto Sync method did only work, when I picked one of the images that did not have the preset applied,  but the grid view -Quick Develop method didn't - maybe that's the preset? Couldn't imagine why. On my other workstation, where I tred this previously, it worked fine with one of the native LR presets.

It is possibly a bad preference file.
This procedure works for both Lightroom Classic and Lightroom Desktop.

If you are using Lightroom Desktop, it can change your local storage location. Please review this setting after resetting preferences.

Reset Procedure:

1. Close Lightroom.

2. Hold down [Alt/Opt]+[Shift] while restarting Lightroom.

3. Overwrite the Preferences when prompted by the dialog.

4. Close Lightroom.

5. Restart Lightroom.

Nooooo not again!
I already tried the third batch - all with the grid method:

  1. I went in and applied the preset to one subfolder that way - worked immediately.
  2. I went to the root folder to apply to all images. Didn't work.
  3. I went back to the previous subfolder, undid all changes, went back to the root folder and then it worked.

Seems like if there's ONE single file with the preset already applied, the operation fails - or rather deosn't even start. Unexpected behaviour!

Thanks for your help, anyways - very much appreciated!

I'm not able to reproduce this. If you're observing a suspected bug, Adobe will only pay attention if they can easily reproduce it. In this case, to ensure they could reproduce it:

1. With a few sample photos selected, do File > Export As Catalog with the option Export Negative Files.

2. Using the sample catalog, write down the precise commands and selections you're giving and the bad behavior that results.

3. Put a copy of the preset and its referenced profile in the exported catalog folder.

4. Zip up the catalog folder, upload it to Wetransfer, Dropbox, Google Drive or similar free service, and post the sharing link here.

Will do - first I have to fight my way through those images though.
Thanks a lot!
