Can't create Keyword in Keyword List

Community Beginner ,

I created nested Keywords without any problems but tonight I can't created keywords.   I creted the following keywords: WHO, WHERE and WHAT.  I had to create the WHAT keyword inside another keyword and then drag and dropped where I wanted.  The "+" on the Keyword List tab doesn't seem to be working anymore.  I tried adding the following keyword, 0 GENRES PORTFOLIO as the top level of nested series.  When I click ok it never appears in the list and it gives no errors.  One fix said to delete the helper.irda files which I did,  but it did not resolve the problem.  Should I reinstall Ligthroom Classic?  That's what I use.

Reinstalling Lightroom Classic is very unlikley to solve the issue describe. Instead, you should try resetting the preference, which when corrupted can cause odd behaviour. Follow Method 1 from below link to reset the preference file.

One possibility: if you do build up a very long list of keywords, this can beyond some point exceed a display dialog limit and truncate what is shown. This does not mean the keywords are not still present. That truncation goes away as an issue whenever the overall list is shortened, by collapsing most of the nested keywords out of view, leaving those you currently do want to see showing. It's a built-in limitation, so would not alter by reinstalling.

You would still be able to search using any temporarily non-showing keywords using the filter bar / smart collection rules, or apply these to images by typing in the Keywording panel. Or bring them back into view by collapsing some large group of nested keywords elsewhere in the list.

If this is not the issue, I agree that a Preferences reset is more likely to help than reinstalling. Also, making sure that the Catalog integrity is being checked, as part of regular exit / backup. Another tactic to deal with Catalog indexing glitches can be to merge Catalog into a brand new clean one, via 'Import from Another Catalog'.

@richardplondon

The issue you describe re long lists occurs on systems using Windows. Since the OP is using a Mac, I wouldn't expect it to be the reason for the odd keyword behaviour.
